Spectroscopy of Nonlinear Gyrotropic Medium and Surface Diagnostics Based on Polarization Effects Due to Self-action of Light

A. A. Golubkov; V.A. Makarov

Abstract Amplitude and polarization characteristics of the light reflected and passed through crystals are found. Four mechanisms of polarization-ellipse nonlinear optical rotation and deformation are studied. A new scheme of nonlinear polarization spectroscopy of uniaxial and cubic crystals is put forward.

Reconstruction of the coordinate dependence of the diagonal form of the dielectric permittivity tensor of a one-dimensionally inhomogeneous medium

A. A. Golubkov; V.A. Makarov

We demonstrate the possibility of a unique reconstruction of the coordinate dependence of all dielectric permittivity tensor components of an absorbing one-dimensionally inhomogeneous plate with any symmetry (except for 1, 2, and m classes) and a negligibly small spatial dispersion. This reconstruction can be performed, the zone of the strong frequency dispersion of the medium inclusive, provided that the reflection and transmission coefficients for the p- and s-polarized plane monochromatic waves are known in a certain range of incidence angles.

Reconstruction of dielectric permittivity profile of a plate with strong frequency dispersion

A. A. Golubkov; V.A. Makarov

We demonstrate the possibility and propose the algorithm of unique reconstruction of the dielectric permittivity profile of a plate with a one-dimensional inhomogeneity (possibly, a plate with absorption), provided that the reflection and transmission coefficients of the plate for s-polarized plane waves are known in a certain range of incidence angles.

Formation of elliptically polarized ring-shaped electric field structures on the self-focusing of light in an isotropic medium featuring a spatially disperse nonlinearity

A. A. Golubkov; V.A. Makarov; I.A. Perezhogin

The possibility is demonstrated that the self-focusing of an elliptically polarized beam in a medium featuring a spatially disperse cubic nonlinearity can give rise to several radially symmetric ring-shaped regions of the same sense of rotation (right or left) of the electric-field vector in the cross-section of the beam. The formation dynamics and propagation features of such electric field structures are studied for various parameters of the incident radiation and nonlinear medium.

Polarization transformation during beam focusing in chiral liquid

V.A. Makarov; A. A. Golubkov; I.A. Perezhogin; Svetlana S. Savvina

The self-focusing of elliptically polarized gaussian beam in isotropic gyrotropic medium with spatial dispersion of nonlinearity has been investigated numerically. Along with the effects predictable by traditional self-focusing theories the new peculiarities of the self-focusing have been found which cannot be described in principle by the aberrationless approximation theory. The dynamics of the light beam cross-section polarization state distribution changes in a process of the beam propagation have been investigated.

Spectroscopy of one-dimensionally inhomogeneous linear absorbing media with arbitrary frequency dispersion

A. A. Golubkov; V.A. Makarov

This study focuses on a one-dimensionally inhomogeneous absorbing plane-parallel plate with dielectric properties characterized by a diagonal tensor of dielectric permittivity. The research has found that based on the reflection and transmission coefficients of p- and s-polarized plane monochromatic waves with frequency ω known for a certain range of incidence angles the coordinate dependence of all the components of the dielectric permittivity tensor of the plate material at frequency ω is determined in a unique manner according to the proposed reconstitution algorithm.

Transformation of the polarization distribution in the cross-section of light beam by self-focusing in a medium with spatial dispersion of nonlinearity

A. A. Golubkov; V.A. Makarov; I.A. Perezhogin

Summary form only given. The self-action of a light beam of the Gaussian profile with a distribution of elliptical polarization uniform in the cross-section in a nonabsorbing medium with spatial dispersion of cubic nonlinearity has been investigated numerically. We have analyzed the dependences of the intensity, the degree of ellipticity and the rotation angle of the main axis of a beam polarization ellipse on the transverse coordinates and length of the medium. It has been established that nonlocality of a nonlinear optical response of the isotropic medium and elliptical polarization of incident radiation strongly affect the threshold conditions of self-focusing and substantially change the character of propagation of Gaussian beams.

Elliptically polarized laser beam in a medium with spatial dispersion of nonlinearity: cross section evolution and light field ring-shaped structures

A. A. Golubkov; I.S. Golubtsov; V.P. Kandidov; V.A. Makarov; I.A. Perezhogin

The self-action of a light beam of the Gaussian profile with a distribution of elliptical polarization uniform in the cross-section in a non-absorbing medium with spatial dispersion of cubic nonlinearity has been investigated numerically. Here, owing to the fact that the nonlocality of the nonlinear optical response and beam polarization were taken into account, we were able to observe a number of new unusual physical effects.

Multivalued steady-state output characteristics of a nonlinear polarizing reflector

A. A. Golubkov; Vladimir A Makarov

The orientation of the polarization ellipse of an optical wave transmitted by a reflector exhibits a multivalued dependence on the wave intensity. At a certain threshold power the number of steady polarization states of light changes by 2.
