The Plasmodium vaughani--Complex.

A. Corradetti; Maria Scanga

Abstract Plasmodium vaughani Novy and MacNeal, 1904 , Plasmodium tenue Laveran and Marullaz, 1914 , and Plasmodium merulae Corradetti and Scanga, 1972 are shown to differ. It is suggested that P. tenue and P. merulae should be considered as subspecies belonging to Plasmodium vaughani -complex. More investigations are needed for a sufficient knowledge of the complex, particularly because at least 36 species of birds harbor P. vaughani -like parasites and cover an immense geographical area in all the parts of the world.
