Color centers created during growth processes as well as formed under various external influences (UV and γ-irradiation, thermal treatments) are studied in YAP–Nd crystals obtained under different technological conditions. The role of impurity ions (including Fe and Cr) in growth and induced crystal coloration as well as models of color centers are discussed.

The mechanisms of creation of the stable color centers generated in GGG-Nd crystals under the influence of UV light and various kind of ionizing radiation (gamma-rays and electrons) are examined. The models of stable color centers in these crystals are proposed. Influence of gamma-irradiation on the GGG-Nd crystal laser generation characteristics is studied. Absorption spectra and decay kinetics of the transient color centers, induced in GGG-Nd by pulsed UV light, are investigated.

The results on optical absorption, photoluminescence and thermoluminescence of YAP-Tm crystals of 1 at.% and 4 at.% of Tm are presented as well as influence ofUV-, γ-radiation and thermal treatments on optical and luminescence properties of the crystals. The blue-green luminescence of defect centers was observed in YAP-Tm crystals at Ar + -laser excitation. The possibility of energy transfer processes between defect centers and Tm 3+ ions was shown.

Abstract The influence of gamma irradiation on optical and lasing properties of YAG:Er, YAG:CTH, YAG:Nd and YAG:Cr4+ single crystals were studied. For no thermal annealed rods from YAG:Er and YAG:CTH crystals the increase of laser output energy was established. The mechanisms of radiation sensibilization are discussed.

In this work the optical and lasing features of 1.2at. percent neodymium doped GGG crystals in comparison to YAG, SLGO and YAP ones are presented. Influence of UV and gamma radiations on a change of absorption and luminescence spectra of the crystal is also reported. The strong influence of UV radiation of pump lamp on lasing characteristics of GGG:Nd crystals is stated. After cut off UV from pump lamp spectrum the slope efficiency of GGG:Nd laser can be placed between SLGO:Nd and SLGO ones.

Abstract The structure of Y 0.5 Er 0.5 AlO 3 was refined from powder diffraction data (powder diffractometer HZG. Cμ Kα): GdFeO 3 type structure, space group Pbnm . a = 5.17011(5)A, b = 5.32872(5)A, c = 7.36274(8)A, Z = 4, R = 0.1042 using the isotropic approximation for thermal parameters. The shortest interatomic distances are: Al O 1.898(6) A. Y(Er) O 2.221(8) A. Y(Er) Al 3.0094(7) A. Y(Er) Y(Er) 3.628(2) A. Al Al 3.6874(1) A. O O 2.682(9)A. The coordination numbers for the atoms are: yttrium (erbium) S, aluminum 6, O 1 12, O 2 13.

Abstract It is shown that the process of thermal relaxation of the photochromic effect in LaGaO 3 crystals proceeds due to transfer of the charges between defects involved in the effect and shallow traps. The crystals exhibit luminescence of Cr 3+ ions, which are an unintentional dopant. However, the emission observed in the thermally stimulated luminescence of the crystals with residual concentration of chromium is associated with luminescent centers different from typical isolated Cr 3+ ions. The spectral properties of these centers are studied.

Abstract The color centers, which are generated in yttrium–aluminium perovskite YAP:Nd(1 at.%) and YAP:Er(50 at.%) crystals under the influence of ultraviolet and γ-irradiation, have been studied by absorption spectroscopy. Both stable and transient at room temperature color centers are generated. It is shown that the transient color centers are mainly responsible for the decrease of laser generation efficiency of Nd:YAP and YAP:Er irradiated crystals, although physical mechanisms leading to efficiency decrease are different in these materials.
