Abstract The low-lying structures of the midshell ν g 9 / 2 Ni isotopes 72Ni and 74Ni have been investigated at the RIBF facility in RIKEN within the EURICA collaboration. Previously unobserved low-lying states were accessed for the first time following β decay of the mother nuclei 72Co and 74Co. As a result, we provide a complete picture in terms of the seniority scheme up to the first ( 8 + ) levels for both nuclei. The experimental results are compared to shell-model calculations in order to define to what extent the seniority quantum number is preserved in the first neutron g 9 / 2 shell. We find that the disappearance of the seniority isomerism in the ( 8 1 + ) states can be explained by a lowering of the seniority-four ( 6 + ) levels as predicted years ago. For 74Ni, the internal de-excitation pattern of the newly observed ( 6 2 + ) state supports a restoration of the normal seniority ordering up to spin J = 4 . This property, unexplained by the shell-model calculations, is in agreement with a dominance of the single-particle spherical regime near 78Ni.

Lifetimes of the states in 44Ti, 48,50Cr, and 52Fe were determined with high accuracy exploiting the recoil distance Doppler-shift method. The reduced E2 transition strengths of 44Ti and 52 Fe differ considerably from previously known values. A systematic increase in collectivity is found for the N = Z nuclei compared to neighboring isotopes. The B(E2) values along the Ti, Cr, and Fe isotopic chains are compared to shell-model calculations employing established interactions for the 0f 1p shell, as well as a novel effective shell-model Hamiltonian starting from a realistic nucleon-nucleon potential. The theoretical approaches underestimate the B(E2) values for the lower-mass Ti isotopes. Strong indication is found for particle-hole cross-shell configurations, recently corroborated by similar results for the neighboring isotone 42 Ca. A detailed manuscript has meanwhile been published in Physics Letters B [1].

An in-beam γ-ray study performed with the114Cd(30Si,p3n) reaction has established the high-spin states up to 5 MeV excitation energy and I=(21)ħ in the N=79 nucleus140Pm. The low energy part of the level scheme shows both positive and negative parity states which are interpreted as single particle excitations in the 2d5/2 and 1h11/2 orbitals. The level scheme is in qualitative agreement with the coupling of the odd particles to the known yrast levels of the appropriate core nuclei.
