Dynamic manifestations of the geomagnetic field in the Quaternary continental sediments of Czechoslovakia

Václav Bucha; Josef Horáček; A. Janáčková

SummaryThe paper brings a brief geological asessment of the sedimentational cycles, analyses the methods of collection and investigation of samples and the representativeness of the results obtained. Problems of magnetic cleaning and the types of demagnetization curves investigated are discussed. The continuous nature of the variations of the magnetic declination, inclination and remanent magnetization, determined by palaeomagnetic investigation of Quaternary sediments, is also discussed. The conclusion contains the principal facts about the dynamics of the geomagnetic field in the Quaternary and points out the possibility of applying them to the theory of the geomagnetic field, as well as to geological correlations.

Certain places on the Earths surface yield virtual poles lying very close together. The segments of the virtual pole paths, corresponding to these places, have a large curvature. The mentioned places of the Earths surface are supposed to be areas with a low rate of the westward drift. They form continuous zones that show a certain relation to global-tectonics features.

Geomagnetic field : contribution of higher harmonics to the variations of virtual pole positions

A. Janáčková; L. Urban

SummaryOn the basis of the 1945 IGRF two sets of virtual geomagnetic poles have been computed and compared. The first set refers to a realistic model of the field; these virtual poles are all located in the north polar area. The second set refers to an artificial field containing higher harmonics only; these virtual poles are distributed over the Earths surface as a whole. However both sets of virtual poles yield similar distributions of values of their space (and probably also time) variations.

Geomagnetisches Restfeld und die Frage Seines Zusammenhanges mit dem Bau der Erdkruste

A. Janáčková

Magnetic field measurements in India during the last two centuries

A. Janáčková; L. Urban; M. Chmelař

SummaryThe direction of the geomagnetic field has changed substantially less in India than in Europe since the end of the 18th century.Whereas the European geomagnetic time series indicate a tendency of secular variation from which a remarkable westward drift of the non-axial field can be deduced, in India the field direction seems to have remained more or less fixed over the last two centuries. The drift of the non-axial field seems to be very small, or even eastward.

The deviation of the total geomagnetic field direction from the dipole field direction as a manifestation of the non-dipole field

A. Janáčková; Jan Anděl; V. Kropáček

SummaryThe angle between the total geomagnetic field direction and the axial dipole field direction was computed for the whole of the Earths surface for the epoch 1945. It was supposed that the dipole field exerts a latitude-dependent influence on the surface manifestation of the non-dipole field. A modifying function of latitude was estimated to eliminate this influence. The isolines of the resulting quantity were plotted.
