Some results of an experimental study of liquid film flow over the surface of a structured packing with a new design for heat and mass exchangers were presented. The influence of the irrigation density on the overflow of liquid from one side of a packing element to the other side was studied. The overflow of liquid from one side of a packing element to the other side was shown to occur abruptly upon attaining a certain irrigation density. A dimensionless quantity, namely, the overflow number, was proposed for estimating uniformity in the distribution of a liquid film over a structured perforated packing bed.

The mechanisms of active surface formation in irregular heat and mass transfer packings were analyzed. The packings under study included Raschig, Pall, and GIAP-N3 rings and Intallox saddles. The efficiencies of GIAP-N3 packings of different sizes under different gas and liquid loads were compared. The packing designs were compared in terms of the useful factor of packing.

AbstractThe results of experiments on practical suitability of a biofilter packing made of natural materials – pine cones are provided. Geometric characteristics of a random packing of pine cones are calculated and compared with other types of packings of artificial and natural materials. Aerodynamic tests of the packing are carried out and obtained data are compared with the data for other packings. Some recommendations on improving the performance characteristics of the packing are suggested.

Some experimental results of studying mass transfer during the evaporation of a liquid film from the surface of flat-plate and corrugated perforated packing into an air flow have been presented. An empirical equation for calculating the average coefficient of mass transfer with allowance for the effect produced by temperatures of heat-transfer agents, their physical properties, and flow rates, as well as the geometrical dimensions of a packed bed, on the mass-transfer process has been given.

The concept of catalytic reactors with a combined regular-filled packing is discussed. Moreover, it is proposed that bundles formed from a film type of vertical corrugated elements be used as a regular packing for tower equipment, and modernized spiral elements be used as a filler. Here, the elements of the filled packing also provide for smoothing of the distribution of liquid phase in the cross section of the reactor.

Results are presented for investigation of the hydrodynamics of regular packings formed from cellular inclined cylinders for heat- and mass-exchange processes. Characteristics of the influence exerted by the angle of incline of the packing elements were investigated, and computational relationships for the coefficient of hydraulic resistance of the packings ascertained during the course of the study.

Mechanisms of formation of the active surface of irregular heat and mass transfer packing are analyzed. Widely spread packing like Raschig, Pall rings, circular packing GIAP-NZ as well as Intalox saddles are considered. Results of comparison of the efficiency of packing GIAP-NZ of different size and at different loads are presented. At comparing the design of packing the concept of the coefficient of the utilization efficiency of the packing volume is used.

The results of analysis of an influence of a sprinkling density in the packed columns were reported on a value of an active surface of irregular ring nozzles such as Raschig and Pall rings. Sizes of Raschig rings were 15, 25 and 50 mm; Pall rings, 50 mm. Values of fluid load was 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50 m3 m−2 h−1). The results of the analysis were presented in graph form.

Results of testing of hydraulic resistance of a regular packing made from vertical corrugated plates are presented. Experiments were carried out in the range of velocities of the air flow 1–5 m s−1 taking into account total cross section of the empty apparatus. Results of experiments are compared with data of the most spread industrial packing.
