Abstract Optical spectra of triply-ionized praseodymium, neodymium, erbium and thulium ions in potassium zinc sulphate glass have been studied. Interaction and intensity parameters are derived. Radiative lifetimes and branching ratios for the fluorescent levels of the respective ions are evaluated. Splitting of certain bands, in their second derivative spectra, could satisfactorily be explained as being due to superposition of the vibrational modes of the sulphate ion on the electronic bands.

Abstract Spectral results of Pr(III), Nd(III), Er(III), Tm(III) ions in fluoro (SFSP), boro (SBSP) and aceto (SASP) phosphate glass environments are reported. Spectroscopic parameters such as Racah, spin-orbit, configuration interaction and Judd-Ofelt intensity parameters have been evaluated. Life-times and branching ratios for certain lasing levels have been estimated. The splittings observed for certain bands in the second derivative spectra can be satisfactorily explained by superposition of the vibrational modes of the phosphate radical on the electronic bands.

Abstract Various spectroscopic parameters have been evaluated from the recorded spectra for the u.v.-vis and near i.r. regions of the Nd 3+ ion in glutamic, L -aspartic and maleic acids. Lifetimes and branching ratios are reported for the fluorescent states of Nd 3+ ion in these acids.

The energy levels such as3P2, 1, 0,1D2,3F4,3 with3H4 as the ground term for PrCl3 mixed in malic, α-ketoglutamic and tartaric acids have been determined. The environmental effects of coordination on the energy level structure and band intensities have been investigated by evaluating the necessary spectral characteristic parameters. The parameters thus obtained have been used for theoretically predicting the lifetimes of the fluorescent levels of the metal ion in three organic acids.
