Abstract The extract of the aerial parts of Artemisia diffusa afforded, in addition to several known eudesmanolides, two new eudesmanolides and a new type of sesquiterpene lactone with an eight-membered ring. The structures were elucidated by high field NMR techniques and some chemical transformations.

The essential oil of Tanacetum (syn. Chrysanthemum) fruticulosum Ledeb. from Iran was investigated by GC, GC–MS and NMR spectroscopy. The oil is characterized by photo-oxidation products of lavandulol and nerolidol. Ninety-seven components, representing 93% of the oil, could be identified. The oil contains mainly monoterpenes [1,8-cineole (8), camphor (12), lavandulol (13), lavandulyl acetate (25)]. The new 5-isopropenyl-2,2-dimethyltetrahydrofuran-3-yl-methyl acetates (30, 31) are trace constituents. Some new farnesyl derivatives [3,6;6,9-bisepoxyfarnesa-1,7(14),10-trienes (43, 44, 48, 49), 7,10-epoxyfarnesa-1,5,11-trien-3-ols (63, 64), 6,9-epoxyfarnesa-1,7(14)10-trien-3-ols (80–83)] were identified by their NMR spectra. Abstract The aerial parts of Dittrichia graveolens afforded in addition to compounds isolated previously five new sesquiterpene lactones, two benzoic acid derivatives while D. viscosa gave two further derivatives of costic acid. The structures were elucidated by high field NMR spectroscopy.

Abstract The aerial parts of Artemisia tournefortiana afforded three new eudesmanolides with a 12,6β-lactone ring and the corresponding acids which may be the precursors of the lactones. From Artemisia aucheri six highly oxygenated geraniol derivatives were isolated. The structures were elucidated by high field NMR techniques.

Ninety constituents (98%) of the essential oil of the leaves and flowers of Achillea eriophora DC. (Compositae) were identified. The main constituents are 1,8-cineole (34%) and the pinenes (13%). The oil contains only 7% of sesquiterpenes, mainly caryophyllene derivatives. Three new farnesol derivatives were isolated as trace constituents. The structures were confirmed by 1H- and 13C-NMR data.

Abstract The aerial parts of Onopordon carmanicum afforded in addition to onopordopicrin and two related esters the epoxide of onopordopicrin, a new elemane derivative, two eudesmanolides and two eudesmane derivatives which most likely are the precursors of the latter lactones. The structures were elucidated by highfield NMR spectroscopy.

Abstract The investigation of the polar fractions of the aerial parts of O. leptolepis afforded two new elemanolides, their structures being elucidated by spectroscopic methods and by partial synthesis starting with onopordopicrin.
