Shale Hydrocarbon Potential of Brown Shale, Central Sumatera Basin Based on Seismic and Well Data Analysis

Abdul Haris; Husein Agil Almunawwar; Agus Riyanto; Andang Bachtiar

The development of unconventional shale hydrocarbon is really depending on integrating approach of wide range disciplines. The integrated approach for analysing organic-rich shale reservoirs involves calibration of core and well-log data, building petrophysical and rock-physics models, and finally characterizing the key reservoir parameters (TOC, porosity, and natural fractures) and mechanical properties evaluation from seismic data. In this research, integrated approach of geochemical, geomechanical, mineralogy, petrophysical, and geophysical analysis are carried out in Brown Shale, Central Sumatera Basin. Total Organic Carbon (TOC), maturity, and brittleness index are the main parameters used in this study to analyse the shale hydrocarbon potential. The result of geochemical analysis shows that the maturity level of shale in the interest zone in oil window, which means it can generate shale oil in early mature phase at depth of 6400 ft. Quantity of shale hydrocarbon potential is indicated by the TOC value of 0.5-1.2 wt. % (fair to good), with average of shale thickness for over 50 ft. The result of geomechanical analysis shows that brittleness index of interest zone for over 0.48 and rock strength below 10000 Psi.

Integrated approach for fracture modeling of carbonate reservoir: A case study of Baturaja formation, West Java Basin

Abdul Haris; Agus Riyanto; Ambar Rachmanto; Adang Sukmatiawa

Baturaja formation has become one prospective reservoir in field A, which has potential number gas inplace with recovery factor up to 29%. However it has a big challenge for developing because of its structural complexity. From special core analysis data and Formation Micro Imaging (FMI) data analysis, it was shown that this reservoir is dominated by fracture indicated by cementation exponent (m) below 2. This paper aims to perform fracture modeling based on the simultaneous integration of geophysical, geological and engineering data to improve reservoir characterization. These integrated data so called fracture drivers, which contain seismic attributes, curvature, porosity, facies, acoustic impedance, elastic impedance and production data. This fracture driver will be ranked using fuzzy-logic tool. After having rank and eliminating the less influential driver, the effect of each fracture driver on the fracturing was analysed. The ranked drivers were used to establish the complex, non-linear relationship r...

Analysis of the characteristics of shale oil potential in Talang Akar formation, Central Ardjuna Basin

Gilang Hamzah Fansury; Abdul Haris; Andang Bachtiar

The reservoir characterization and identification of shale oil in Talang Akar formation has been done by examining the total organic carbon (TOC), brittleness index (BI) and some maturity parameters. Analyzing said parameters, various methods were used to analyze these parameters, including geochemistry, mineralogy, petrophysics, crossplotting, and seismic interpretation. Through geochemistry analysis, TOC resulted in a good category with material type of kerogen I-II which usually produces oil with an early maturity window which approximately 7900 ft. The brittleness index of the shale formation of the research area is categorized in less brittle to brittle. The petrophysics analysis resulted in shale thickness between 120-150 ft in the research area and TOC modelling resulted in 0.6986 regression coefficient towards log parameters (gamma ray log, density, Neutron-Porosity, sonic and resistivity). Through seismic analysis and interpretation, we are able to examine the shale distribution of the net shale ...
