Bird Element Symbolism in Malay Proverbs

Wan Norasikin Wan Ismail; Abdul Latif Samian; Nazri Muslim

Proverb is an important component in the traditional Malay poetry which shapes Malay courtesy and values that have become part of their daily life. Malay proverbs stem from the Malay minds which are adequately sensitive to the surroundings, including the flora and fauna. This explains why animal antics and behaviour are interpreted in proverbs comparatively with human attitude. Animal-related proverbs can be found in almost all cultures. The Malay?s life experiences with these animals have given a broad scope of knowledge on the habit and behaviour of the animals.? This is why human attitude and behaviour are inseparable from those of the animals. Thus, these animals are depicted with various symbols representing their physical characteristics and behaviour signified figuratively and compared with those of humans.

Hazwani Che Ab Rahman; Nur Asyikin Hamdan; Abdul Latif Samian; Nazri Muslim

Science is a knowledge that has become a tool for technological formation and advancement to ensure the development of the communities and countries. Science is also one of the fundamentals of the establishment of national identity through education. Nevertheless, science which has been taught to the society these days is accepted based on liberal and secular belief formed by the Western. Science at the present time is developed and distributed based on the nature and personality of Western culture. Therefore, effort to change the Western science or specifically called as the Islamisation of Science‟, is a responsibility that must be held by intellectuals. Islamisation of science is an effort introduced by Syed Muhammad Naquib Al-Attas, Ismail AlFaruqi, Seyyed Hossein Nasr and many other intellectuals to restore the integration between science and Islam. This study highlighted an intellectual who has contributed greatly in the Islamisation of science as well as his thoughts and ideas in promoting the Islamisation of science. Mohd Yusof who has popularized the „Tauhidik Science‟ book is among intellectuals who has voiced out his ideas through writing, oral presentation and various activities in which the objective is to islamise the science. Mohd Yusof‟s idea has been referred to as an evaluation of thought and effort to restore the identity of Muslims through education.

Forces of the Cosmos in Alam Minangkabau: A Phenomenological Perspective

Abdul Latif Samian

The literature of the Minangkabau tribe of the Malay World is rich with proverbs based on their view of ‘nature and nurture’. By and large, they construe the world (alam) as an open book and a ‘guru’ into the mysteries of life. In this paper, the author will examine some of those proverbs based on the book Kato Pusako Papatah Patitih Ajaran dan Filsafat Minangkabau. Towards the end, an outline of their belief regarding the destiny of man, levels of reality and the gradation of what is occult and manifest is analysed within the unfolding drama between skies and earth.
