Precipitation Modeling for Accelerated Alloy Development

Precipitates represent a key class of microstructure in high-performance alloys due to their significant impact on mechanical properties. Achieving optimal performance of highperformance alloys often requires careful design of desirable precipitation microstructure and avoidance of detrimental precipitation phases. The recent development of computational precipitation modeling represents an opportunity for the discipline of Integrated Computational Materials Engineering. This paper discusses the progress in the verification, calibration and validation of mechanistic precipitation modeling tools, and their integration and application within an integrated framework and methodology for accelerating alloy development of ultra-high-strength steels, 7000 series aluminum alloys and nickel-base superalloys. It is shown that, under a stage-gate system engineering framework, computational materials models and tools, including precipitation modeling, can provide significant benefit for accelerating the alloy development and the qualification of new alloys for industrial applications.
