This paper contributes to the ongoing debate about how local events interact with global pressures in contemporary times. The paper adopts an interpretive approach to study e-banking services in Nigerian banks. We integrate ideas and concepts from both institutional theory and strategic management to study the reformation of the Nigerian banking system. Strategic management suggests that organisational actions are largely influenced by economic and efficiency reasons while institutional theory argues that organisational actions are motivated by legitimacy considerations where organisations compulsively conform to some widely-held beliefs and expectations of the appropriate ways of doing things within the organisation and its environment.

We employ concepts and ideas from institutional theory to examine how institutions influence implementation and use of a global Intranet system in a distributed international research organisation – the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT). We also illustrate how the investments of a particular institution – the national government of India – on public infrastructure assisted in shaping an enterprise-wide deployment of intranets. Institutions can exert great influences on the deployment of intranet systems and understanding these influences is important for realising the primary objectives of implementing enterprise systems.

In developing countries, Information Technology education is associated with high cost and is not typically available outside urban areas. Seeking IT education might not be on the priority list of countries battling numerous problems related to healthcare, housing, nutrition and other basic needs of life, but globally, IT education is an increasingly important aspect of human resource development, as well as economic development. This article presents a case where the provision of IT education differs from the conventional emphasis on urban dwellers. The authors discuss the case of Summit Computers in a rural community in Nigeria. The analysis of the case suggests that for developing countries to benefit from advances in IT, awareness among the real users, convenience, affordability and consideration of how IT training can meet local needs and employment are important factors. Entrepreneurship, participation and empowerment of local users are also discussed as important factors that enhance the sustainability of IT education in rural communities.

AbstractKnowledge management (KM) as a discipline and a research area is quite broad. The complexity of what knowledge means in addition to the growing interest in KM has led to different approaches to managing knowledge. It has also led to different streams of research areas and thus multiple definitions. This paper discusses the concepts of knowledge from the perspective of various disciplines and various views are synthesized. The paper presents the position of contemporary organizations regarding knowledge and discuses how knowledge is being conceptualized in information systems and organizations and management disciplines. This clear conceptualization of knowledge could determine the focus of KM in organization and assist in the categorization of the nature of KM research.
