The objective of this study was to estimate the prevalence of malocclusion and associated variables such as deleterious habits (DH) and oronasopharyngeal alterations (OA), mouth breathing, atypical phonation, and atypical swallowing in three-year-old children in Vitoria, Espirito Santo State, Brazil. The sample included 291 children of both sexes enrolled in a Childrens Educational Center and selected through probability sampling by conglomerates. Logistic regression indicated a high relative risk (RR) in children with altered overjet, open bite, and cross-bite to present mouth breathing (RR = 1.89; CI: 1.56-2.03), (RR = 2.46; CI: 2.00-3.02), (RR = 1.45; CI: 1.23-1.72); atypical swallowing (RR = 2.57; CI: 1.87-3.52), (RR = 3.49; CI: 2.53-4.81), (RR = 1.86; CI: 1.46-2.39); and atypical phonation (RR = 2.25; CI: 1.66-3.05), (RR = 3.18; CI: 2.38-4.25), (RR = 1.71; CI: 1.32-2.22), respectively. An association was shown between finger or pacifier sucking and altered overjet (p < 0.001), and between pacifier sucking and open bite (p < 0.001). Such results indicate that the prevalence of malocclusions is associated with DH and OA.

Adauto Emmerich; Luis David Castiel

This paper describes how dentistry in Brazil currently participates in the transformations of the object of its activity into commodities with which consumers can indulge their aesthetic desires. It explores the construction of the dental object of desires and its relationship with the dentist and the patient-consumer in the contemporary world. The paper makes explicit the role of the mega-dental congresses, which provide a biotechnological self-service that allure and seduce, creating uniform consumer values eager for the new offerings from dental surgeons. Also analyzes the role of the media in dental practices. It concludes that the individuation of the dental surgeon has generated a petrified ontology and fragmented epistemology. The paper presents some pressing tasks for the academic and professional sectors and society as a whole, such as the development of strategies and discussion about communication related to oral health.

Adauto Emmerich; Luis David Castiel

The theoretical perspective of the analysis conducted is linked to the fact that dental awareness should not be seen as something universal, independent from reality, though participating in its construction. This paper explores the idea symbolized in the colonization of contemporary Dentistry awareness to beyond « the more human than human ». With the example of the increasing pathologization of halitosis, as an objective disorder not only of oral health, but that affects individuals, this work develops an analysis of the (re)invention of pathologies, through visualization technologies in late modernity. It concludes that the veracity of dental awareness, among the main actors, its discourses and its social practices, is never neutral, but always articulated to the interests with which it is permanently involved. The sense of smell moves from knowledge memory and from space to time and certainly from things to beings. Halitosis is, most of the times, unlikely, mixed, singular, and uncertain in time and place.
