Purpose – This paper attempts to propose a conceptual model to explain the micro-level antecedents of absorptive capacity (ACAP) and social context of joint engineering project teams. It delineates ACAP into four dimensions and suggests specific level for each dimension. Revisiting the micro-foundational origin of ACAP, acquisition of partners embedded knowledge through joint project teams requires complex interaction among individuals, thus the effect of individual differences and perception in the teams context is proposed. Design/methodology/approach – Cohen and Levinthals assertion on the conceptual affinity that ACAP shares with creative capacity and organizational learning was revisited. Upon synthesizing pertinent literature, individual antecedents were conceptualized, while strategic alliance literature was examined to theorize on the social context. Findings – Propositions relating individual antecedents and social context to associated dimension of ACAP are postulated. Furthermore, the paper ...

Purpose – The purpose of this study is to elucidate the factors that underlie the differences in individual absorptive capacity (ACAP) within the context of joint project teams, following the individual-level perspective on potential ACAP. Design/methodology/approach – The model was empirically validated through structural equation modeling conducted on a cross-sectional survey of 248 local team members of joint projects in the Nigerian upstream oil industry. Findings – Prior experience and learning goal orientation are positively associated with the ability to assimilate knowledge, whereas performance approach goal orientation and need for cognition are positively associated with the ability to recognize the value of knowledge. Surprisingly, no significant relationship exists between prior experience and ability to recognize the value of knowledge. In addition, the positive relationship between ability to recognize the value of knowledge and ability to assimilate knowledge is supported. Originality/value...

This study investigates the significance of individual differences on the local personnel capability to acquire knowledge from joint project engineering teams. The model proposes individuals prior experience, learning orientation and perception of partners support as antecedents of local personnel absorptive capacity. The hypothesized model was validated through the outcome of the structural equation modelling conducted on a cross sectional survey of 248 local personnel of joint project engineering teams in the Nigerian upstream oil industry. All the hypothesized relationships were supported, with the exception of that between learning orientation and ability to assimilate knowledge. Accordingly, the theoretical and practical implications of the findings were explained, with suggestions offered on the direction for future research.

Purpose – International joint ventures offer the appropriate platform for the host partners in an emerging economy to access the external knowledge embedded in the expatriate from foreign partners. However several factors could constrain the acquisition of this knowledge by the local employees who are engaged in the former. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the underlying differences for the individual’s knowledge acquisition capability. Design/methodology/approach – Individual’s knowledge acquisition capability was conceptualized as the individual dimension of absorptive capacity (ACAP). Given the engagement of employees in joint project teams, the team members are expected to differ in their experience and disposition to task. Thus, these differences are considered as predictors of the local team members ACAP, i.e., abilities to: recognize the value of; and assimilate the external knowledge embedded in the foreign partners. The hypothesized model was validated through the results of structural...

Purpose This paper aims to investigate the micro-level antecedents of absorptive capacity (ACAP) based on the multilevel perspective of learning capabilities in asymmetric joint project engineering teams constituted by local employees and expatriates. Design/methodology/approach The authors integrated the micro-foundational and multilevel learning theories to delineate the individual and team dimensions of ACAP. Using structural equation modelling, the authors tested the hypothesized relationships among the underlying individual determinants and multilevel dimensions of ACAP. The data were collected from a sample of 248 local employees from 76 joint project engineering teams in the Nigerian upstream oil industry. Findings ACAP entails individual and team capabilities, which depend on prior experience and need for cognition. The creation of shared understanding is essential for the transition of an individual’s knowledge assimilation capability into team’s knowledge utilization capability. Originality/value This study contributes to extant understanding of the multilevel perspective of learning capabilities, i.e. ACAP in a knowledge intensive team like joint project engineering.

This study advances the multidimensional concept of absorptive capacity (ACAP) by theorizing the individual and collective capabilities underpinning knowledge acquisition and utilization in joint project teams in Nigerian upstream oil industry. By assuming the lowest form of engagement as the joint project teams constituted by local employees and competent expatriate, this study demonstrates the relationship among the dimensions of ACAP. Survey was administered to local team members of joint project teams. The collected data (n=248) was analysed with the aid of structural equation modelling (SEM). As hypothesized, individual ability to recognize the value of partner knowledge was significantly related to their ability to assimilate the knowledge. The positive relationship between individual ability to assimilate knowledge and team shared cognition was supported. Furthermore, the individual ability to assimilate partner knowledge was found to be indirectly related to team ability to utilize the knowledge, through the team shared cognition.

This study builds on the behavioural perspective of Green IT to investigate the cognitive determinants of IT professional Green IT beliefs and the implications of such beliefs on their attitude towards Green IT practices. We posited that an individual’s belief about Green IT could be informed by one’s knowledge and awareness of the adverse effect of non-sustainable practices on the environment. Also, we hypothesized beliefs as the determinant of one’s attitude towards Green IT practices. The outcome of the empirical investigation on a sample of data collected from IT professionals in Malaysia provided support for our hypotheses. Furthermore, the implications of the ensuing findings for the existing literature and the successful management of Green IT practices were discussed.

This paper aims to understand the factors that can determine the knowledge sharing (KS) intention and behaviour of academics in Malaysian higher learning institutes (HLIs), thus affecting academics research productivity.,The study’s respondents were 525 academics from public and private HLI in Malaysia. This study adapts theory of planned behaviour (TPB) and social capital theory (SCT) to determine academics KS intention and behaviour of academics and the factors that can influence along the KS process.,Results indicate that among the factors of academics KS behaviour, there are two factors that are not significant, commitment and perceived cost, while the rest showed significant results. The strongest factors are management support and social media use among academics. The result also shows that academics intention to share is explained by 62.1 per cent of the variance, while academics KS behaviour is explained by 47.1 per cent of the variance.,This study shows the high intention and behaviour of sharing among Malaysian academics and suggests that academics in this country are cautious and aware of the importance of knowledge for human capital and development of nation.,This paper facilitates university in hiring academics that support KS activities.,The integration of TPB and SCT in evaluating Malaysian academics KS behaviour can eventually affect the research productivity. Furthermore, addition of several variables, such as perceived cost, facilitating conditions make this study a holistic model to predict academic research performance.

Further to the binary notion of accessibility and lack of accessibility to digital technology, this study examines Internet usage as the outcome of choice made by an individual to use the Internet. In identifying the determinants of choice, this study integrates the social cognitive theory notion of the human agency with the ability-motivation-opportunity (AMO) framework. The results of path modeling analysis of the data collected from 270 respondents in Malaysia showed that digital skill was the most significant predictor of Internet usage. Opportunity and extrinsic motivation were also significant predictors, whereas intrinsic motivation had no significant effect on Internet usage. Besides, the findings revealed that the traditional sociodemographic determinants of the digital divide are still prevalent in Malaysia.

This study investigates the underlying differences in individual knowledge acquisition capabilities. Drawing on the individual dimension of absorptive capacity, we clarify the antecedents of local team members capability to acquire foreign partners knowledge in joint ICT project team. Specifically, we proposed prior experience, learning goal orientation and need for cognition as antecedents to local employees abilities to (1) recognise the value of and (2) assimilate foreign partners knowledge. The hypothesised model was validated by the results of the structural equation modelling conducted using the data gathered from a cross-sectional survey of 205 local team members of joint ICT project teams in Malaysia. Most of the hypothesised relationships were supported, with further discussion focused on the non-supported relationships. Finally, the theoretical and practical implications of these findings were explained.
