A new theoretical assessment of the Ni–Sn system has been performed by use of the CALPHAD method. Recent experimental results were significantly different from older experimental data and, therefore, a new reassessment of older theoretical work was necessary. The theoretical models for some intermetallic phases were changed to make them consistent with other binary systems in the thermodynamic database developed in the scope of COST action MP0602. Very good agreement was reached both with new experimental phase equlibrium data and older thermodynamic data.Graphical abstract

The current state of thermodynamic modelling in the field of high-temperature lead-free soldering is presented. A consistent thermodynamic database, containing 18 elements (Ag, Al, Au, Bi, Co, Cu, Ga, Ge, Mg, Ni, P, Pb, Pd, Sb, Sn, Ti and Zn) has been created. The thermodynamic data for the most of the important binary and selected ternary systems were checked and included into the database. The database was tested using major commercial software packages. Such reliable and sophisticated software coupled to reliable thermodynamic databases are necessary prerequisites for application of thermodynamics in advanced alloys design.

The Sb-Sn-Zn alloy was prepared and researched by experimental methods, which allow obtaining information on the thermodynamic stability of the coexisting phases. Thermal analysis was used to determine the phase transition temperatures of experimental alloys. Equilibrium composition of coexisting phases after long-term temperature equilibration was determined by electron microscopy. The existence of one ternary stoichiometric phase Sb2SnZn was experimentally confirmed by diffraction technique. The CALPHAD method for prediction of the phase diagram of the Sb-Sn-Zn system from binary subsystems was used in this work.

Phase compositions of B-Fe-Mn-V alloys were studied by several experimental methods (DTA measurement, X-ray diffractions, and scanning electron microscopy). Besides the experimental study of the quaternary system, thermodynamic modelling of the ternary B-Mn-V system by the Calphad method and thermodynamic calculations for the quaternary B-Fe-Mn-V system were performed. Calculations for the quaternary system are based on the ternary subsystems (B-Mn-V, B-Fe-V, B-Fe-Mn, and Fe-Mn-V). Boron is modelled as an interstitial element in all solid solutions of vanadium, manganese, and iron. Very good agreement between experimental results and thermodynamic calculations was achieved. The created thermodynamic database is suitable for thermodynamic calculations of phase diagrams for all the ternary subsystems and also for the B-Fe-Mn-V quaternary system.
