Dyeing of Wool and Cotton with Extract of the Nettle (Urtica dioica L.) Leaves

Ferda Eser; Adem Onal

The aim of the study is to investigate the optimum dyeing conditions for wool and cotton fabrics with the nettle (Urtica dioica L.) extract. For this purpose, the leaves of the nettle were extracted with distilled water by using Soxhlet apparatus. Wool and cotton fabrics were pretreated with artificial animal urine system (AAUS) including NH3 (3%, v/v), CaC2O4 (3%, m/v), and urea (3%, m/v) before dyeing processes in order to improve the fastness properties of the dyed samples. The best dyeing conditions were evaluated in terms of color strength. The results reveal that the nettle leaves shall probably be an important raw material especially for dyeing of wool fibers.

Turkey has a wide range of flora and fauna due to its climatic diversity. Medicinal plants from Turkey have been used since ancient times for their primary health care. In this study, we examined antiproliferative activities of the extracts from Crataegus monogyna, Vitis vinifera, Glycrrhiza glabra, Alnus glutinosa L. gaertn, and Alcea rosea against rat brain tumor (C6) and human cervical cancer (HeLa) cell lines. The results were compared with the standard anticancer drugs 5-Flurouracil (5-FU) and Cisplatin. C. monogyna, V. vinifera and A. rosea exhibited better antiproliferative activity than 5-FU and cisplatin at 100-75 µg/mL concentrations, against C6 cell lines. On the other hand, C. monogyna and V. vinifera extracts showed considerable antiproliferative activity against HeLa cells compared with 5-FU and cisplatin at 100-75 µg/mL. It can be suggested that, C. monogyna, A. glutinosa L. gaertn, V. vinifera and A. rosea extracts could be developed as an anticancer drug. GRAPHICAL ABSTRACT

In this study, dyeability of wool fabrics with walnut leaves extract have been investigated in presence of various acids including acetic acid, citric acid, maleic acid, oxalic acid, and formic acid. Each wool fabric was pretreated with 1 M of acid solution, separately. The pretreated fabrics were dyed with walnut leaves extract using various mordants by metamordanting method. Color strength values of the dyed fabrics were evaluated by measuring K/S values. Fastness properties (washing, rubbing, and light fastness) were also determined. The pretreated fiber sample surfaces were observed using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The present study showed that citric acid pretreatment plays an important role for improving the dyeability of wool fabrics with walnut leaves extract.

Abstract Aim: D-pinitol, a natural compound has shown various biological and pharmacological effects. Last studies are focused on the determination of its further pharmacological activities including mainly biological activity. Therefore, isolation of D-pinitol from the leaves of Colutea cilicica Boiss et Bal. and investigation of its apoptotic and anti-inflammatory activity on K562 cell lines were aimed in the concept of the study. Materials and methods: Isolation of D-pinitol was performed by column chromatography. Chemical structure of the compound was confirmed by spectroscopic methods including 1H NMR, 13C NMR, 2D NMR, HPLC-TOF/MS, and IR. Cell viability was evaluated by dose and time dependent in K562 cell lines. D-pinitol was isolated from C. cilicica leaves for the first time. Results: Stimulation of cells with D-pinitol (0–80 μM) was observed for 24, 48 and 72 h. It is determined that D-pinitol inhibited protein expression of Cox-2 in K562 cells. We observed that Poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) protein expression did not change, but Cox-2 protein expression reduced with non-cytotoxic concentrations of D-pinitol. Conclusion: It is concluded that D-pinitol did not affect cell proliferation and apoptosis in K562 cells however reduced the inflammation, significantly. These results show that D-pinitol may be anti-inflammatory agent for the treatment of K562 cells.

Investigation of Dyeing Properties of Different Fabric Species with Alkanna Orientalis Root Extract

Adem Onal; Ferda Eser; Seda Bayrak

In this study, the dyeing properties of different fabric species were investigated using root extract of yellow sormunen (Alkanna orientalis). For this purpose, the cotton and wool fabrics were dyed using the root extract of yellow sormunen by pre-mordanting, together-mordanting and last-mordanting methods with copper sulfate (CuSO4), iron sulfate (FeSO4) and aluminum sulfate (AiK(SO4)2) at medium pH. The same procedure was applied to cotton and wool fabrics that allowed in Artifical Urinary System (AUS) [%3 NH3 + %3 urea + %3 CaC2O4 (g/v)] for 24 h. The color codes were determined with Pantone Color Quide, and K/S and L* a* b* values were detected with color measurement spectrophotometer, and also washing-, crocking-fastness levels were evaluated using gray scale. According to the evaluations, the fabrics dyed pre-treated with AUS have higher fastness values than the unpre-treated dyed fabrics with AUS.

ABSTRACT In the present study, dyeing potential of waste water from distillation process was investigated for fresh and dried herbs of Menthaspicata (MS), Menthapiperita (MP), and Salvia officinalis (SO) species. Meta-mordanting method was used in the dyeing of wool and cotton fabrics in the presence of FeSO4·7H2O (iron) and AlK(SO4)2·12H2O (alum) mordants. The color of each dyed material was investigated in terms of the CIELab (L*, a*, b*, C, and h°) and K/S values. The surfaces of the samples were observed using a scanning electron microscope. It was observed that the color strength of fresh and dried plant is depended on the plant species, mordant, and fabric type. Best color intensity (K/S = 16.68) was obtained with iron mordant using fresh SO on cotton fabric. For wool fabric, the highest color strength (K/S = 9.62) was obtained with fresh SO in the presence of alum mordant. Presence of metal mordant for natural dyeing process of cotton with MS, MP, and SO extract has shown remarkable improvement in terms of dye adherence and fastness properties thus metal mordanting could be suitable alternative dyeing method for ecofriendly industrial application.

Abstract The present study focused on dyeing, fastness, cytotoxic properties, and phenolic constituents of various types of fabrics including viscose, cotton, wool, and polyester-viscose blended fabrics with different parts of Anthemis tinctoria var. tinctoria. Comparative study was carried out between ethanol and aqueous extracts of stem, flower, and root of the plant in terms of phenolic constituents, cytotoxic activity, and dyeing properties. It was found that the quantity of phenolic constituents of ethanol and aqueous extracts was quite different. All parts of the plant extract show 0% cytotoxicity except ethanol extract of the root. All the extracts exhibit better cytotoxic activity than the standard cancer drug 5-Florouracil. Ethanol and water extracts of A. tinctoria var. tinctoria plant were used to dye fabrics, but only the water extract displayed dyeing properties. Best color strength value (K/S = 9.19) was obtained with aqueous extract of the stem in the presence of alum mordant for cotton fabrics.

Ferda Eser; Mustafa Tutak; Adem Onal; Bilal Meral

ABSTRACT In this study, apple leaves were used to dye wool and cotton fabrics. Effects of mordant type and dyeing technique on color yield and fastness properties were investigated. The selected dyed fibre sample surfaces were observed using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Color strength (K/S) values of the dyed fabrics were between 0.53 and 20.56. Washing and rubbing fastness results of the dyed fabrics were moderate/high. The SEM images of the naturally dyed fabrics demonstrated a smooth surface profile. We have concluded that apple leaf is suitable for the natural dyeing of wool fabrics.
