Production of polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) by Ralstonia eutropha JMP 134 with volatile fatty acids from palm oil mill effluent as precursors

Tjandra Setiadi; Martha Aznury; Azis Trianto; Adi Pancoro

The highest volatile fatty acids (VFAs) concentration from palm oil mill effluent (POME) treated by anaerobic fermentation was achieved for a 1-day process when the main acids used were acetic, propionic and butyric acids. Polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) production with VFAs from POME as precursors in the fed-batch mode has advantages over batch mode, both in terms of its productivity and 3HV (3-hydroxyvalerate) composition in the produced polymer. With the fed batch, the productivity increased to 343% and contained more 3HV than those of the batch. The structures of the PHA were identified by different methods and they supported each other; the resulting products consisted of functional groups of 3HB (3-hydroxybutyrate) and 3HV.

Allelic pattern and diversity in wild stocks of the giant freshwater prawn (Macrobrachium rosenbergii) from Indonesia

Andi Eko Maryanto; Robi Binur; Adi Pancoro

In order to provide basic information for restocking program, allelic pattern and diversity in wild stocks of the giant freshwater prawn (Macrobrachium rosenbergii) from Indonesia was studied using microsatellite analysis. The research was performed among the population from nine wildtype populations, Medan (MDN), Padang (PDG), Jambi (JMB), Lampung (LPG), Palembang (PLG), Ciamis (CMS), Palangkaraya (PLK), Samarinda (SMD), and Papua (PPA). Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) with fluorescent label detection showed that a total of 38 alleles were amplified from five primers. The average number of alleles (Na) per locus, observed heterozygosity (Ho), expected heterozygosity (He) and Polymorphic Information Content (PIC) were 11.2, 0.902, 0.664, and 0.666, respectively. The result of the present study of the giant freshwater prawn genetic diversty supports the basic information for broodstock restocking program. On other hand, the wildtype populations from Papua and Palembang displayed the highest genetic diversi...

The distribution of genome shared identical by descent for a pair of full sibs by means of the continuous time Markov chain

Hongki Julie; Udjianna S. Pasaribu; Adi Pancoro

This paper will allow Markov Chain’s application in genome shared identical by descent by two individual at full sibs model. The full sibs model was a continuous time Markov Chain with three state. In the full sibs model, we look for the cumulative distribution function of the number of sub segment which have 2 IBD haplotypes from a segment of the chromosome which the length is t Morgan and the cumulative distribution function of the number of sub segment which have at least 1 IBD haplotypes from a segment of the chromosome which the length is t Morgan. This cumulative distribution function will be developed by the moment generating function.

This research is to define and develop the Pandemic Influenza simulation program. There are 3 parameters to determine whether a virus is potentially dangerous or not: (1) infectivity (2) virulence and (3) contagiousness. Avian Influenza has characteristics as follows: relatively high infectivity, high virulence and low contagiousness. On the other hand, Swine Influenza has characteristics as follows: relatively high infectivity, low virulence and high contagiousness. Pandemic Influenza happens because of these 3 parameters changes: increment of infectivity; virulence and contagiousness. These changes can trigger the Pandemic Influenza to become more infectious, spread faster within wider location.
