OBJECTIVE To evaluate intervening factors in patient safety, focusing on hospital nursing staff. METHOD The study is descriptive, with qualitative approach, excerpt from a larger study with analytical nature. It was undertaken in a public hospital in Fortaleza, CE, Brazil, between January and June 2013, with semi-structured interviews to 70 nurses, using Thematic Content Analysis. RESULTS The principal intervening factors in patient safety related to hospital nursing staff were staff dimensioning and workload, professional qualification and training, team work, being contracted to the institution, turnover and lack of job security, and bad practice/disruptive behaviors. These aspects severely interfere with the establishment of a safety culture in the hospital analyzed. CONCLUSION It is necessary for managers to invest in nursing staff, so that these workers may be valued as fundamental in the promotion of patient safety, making it possible to develop competences for taking decisions with focus on the improvement of quality care. Objective: To evaluate intervening factors in patient safety, focusing on hospital nursing staff. Working necessarily with Likert scales to measure Nursing Outcomes Classification (NOC) outcomes has the advantage of unification, but also presents difficulty in reducing the rating from 1 to 5, especially when the research is qualitative and thus includes the use of words and expressions, as well as observations and perceptions. What exactly does a score of 2 or 3 mean with regard to the NOC Health beliefs? In this paper, we make a number of different proposals for operationalizing concepts and transforming them to numbers; however, it should be noted that such proposals always end in a quantitative analysis. Thus, we propose the use of emic/etic qualitative observations for psychosocial and cultural indicators, following ethnographic principles. Basic and applied research on nursing languages must have correct methodological foundations and seek to satisfy the same criteria of methodological suitability as any other research.

Objective: Validating the content of the nursing intervention called Environmental Control: worker safety in Spain. Methods: An exploratory and descriptive study using the Fehring method associated with the Delphi method and a sample of 11 experts in occupational nursing. For the clarity of definition and the activities was used a scale ranging from confusing (1) and clear (7) or vaguely (1) and exactly (7). A Likert scale (1 - totally disagree /5 - totally agree) was used for the nursing action and the need of the activity for its intervention. Results: The nursing action was considered as critical with the mean score of 0.86% (SD=0.23) and 73 % of the experts considered that the title of the intervention exactly identifies the contents of the definition. Conclusion: The intervention was considered valid for occupational health with the need for practical applicability using a system of classification specific for occupational health nursing, with the Nursing Process implementation.

Based on experiences and reflections reported by health professionals, the aim of this study was to critically analyze the actions, situations, and decisions in healthcare services that involve breastfeeding, examining aspects that favor or limit its possibilities. This was a qualitative study based on the conceptual framework of vulnerability and healthcare, using focus groups with 25 healthcare professionals participating in the Committee on Breastfeeding in Londrina, Paraná State, Brazil. The material was produced with a comprehensive format, focusing on questions that involved the breastfeeding process and its approaches and decisions. The study raises issues for understanding how the way mothers and families deal with breastfeeding is linked to organization of the practices and individual and social aspects, requiring integration between practical and technical/scientific knowledge. The article portrays the complexity of healthcare for women and children, allowing an enhanced approach to routine healthcare and the related strategies for breastfeeding.
