The objective of this study was to test the feasibility of a treatment programme based on the elements of constraint-induced movement therapy (CIMT) to encourage use of the affected arm of a child with obstetric brachial plexus injury (OBP), as well as to document clinical changes observed with this intervention. A 2-year-old female child with Erbs palsy had 14 weeks of daily home-based treatment with 30-minute sessions planned according to the principles of CIMT. The child was assessed every 2 weeks with the Toddler Arm Use Test. Test scores throughout the intervention period demonstrated improvements in quality of movement, amount of use and willingness to use the affected extremity. The childs mother reported improved ability to perform bimanual activities at home. The results suggest that treatment based on CIMT principles has potential to promote functional gains for children with OBP. Experimental studies should test the effects of this kind of intervention for children with OBP.

Home environment is an important setting for child participation. This study investigated the participation of Brazilian children and adolescents in household self-care (SC) and family-care (FC) tasks. Interviews were conducted with 109 caregivers of children and adolescents ages 6 to 14 years residing in Belo Horizonte (Brazil). Multiple regression models revealed that a greater number of FC tasks were performed by children and adolescents (R2 = .23) from families who did not have a housekeeper and those in which the mothers did not work outside of the home; children and adolescents from this subgroup also received less assistance from the caregivers (R2 = .21) and showed greater independence in task performance (R2 = .20). On average, Brazilian children and adolescents participate in about half of the SC and 25% the FC household tasks. Factors related to family structure and child’s age were associated with task performance, caregiver assistance, and child and adolescent independence in household tasks.

OBJECTIVES: to evaluate the quantity and quality of environmental stimuli available to infants with normal development who use a baby walkers prior to learning to walk by themselves. METHODS: a cross-sectional study was carried out with 24 infants distributed into two groups of twelve: one group of children who had used a baby walkers (BW) and 12 who had not (C), with the children in both groups being of equivalent ages, sex, and socio-economic background. The Home Observation for Measurement of the Environment (HOME) test provided a documentary Record of the stimuli provided by the environment. Students t-test for independent samples was used to compare the mean scores on the HOME test of both groups, considering the level of significance to be α=0.05. RESULTS: differences in the HOME scores, with the BW group obtaining higher scores than the control group (p=0.014), with a low magnitude effect (d=0.24). CONCLUSIONS: the use of a childrens baby walkers in the period before learning to walk by infants with normal development may be associated with more stimulating home environments.
