In a world where networking services are increasingly being provided by service overlay networks, management of these services at overlay level is becoming crucially important. This paper presents an architecture for services management in P2P Service Overlay Networks (SON). The architecture, named OMAN, takes into account the formation of the P2P SON comprising several different service providers belonging to several different network domains. It uses P2P mechanisms to provide service search and service self-improvement through the monitoring of the P2P SON overlay and self-configuration. Preliminary results concerning service aggregation and service searching are presented in this paper, giving an insight into the expected benefits and providing proof of concept as well as pointing the overall potential of the OMAN architecture.

Peer-to-peer service overlay networks (P2P SON) are increasingly being infrastructure providers for networking services, allowing service providers to cooperatively offer and run a flexible set of services. Regarding this condition, the selection of peers is a key issue for improving resource usage; service performance, and ultimately end users Quality of Experience (QoE). This paper presents an approach to best peer selection in a three-tier P2P SON architecture, allowing the splitting of service business functions and peer selection functions. The proposed best peer selection approach is evaluated by simulation, using a literature available geographic positioning metrich that takes into account real delay and jitter made available by the CAIDA project and MaxMinds free database. The simulation results show the consistency and good performance of the proposed peer selection approach.

This paper presents a mechanism to improve the efficiency of service searching in large-scale multi-domain environments composed of service providers organized in a P2P Service Overlay Network (SON). This mechanism relies on a P2P overlay-tier whose purpose is to aggregate the services and service components maintained by service providers in the P2P SON. We name this mechanism Aggregation Service (AgS). It comprises the service and service components publishing and allows the separation between the service providers and the search schema. The average search path length was used as metric for the AgS assessment through simulation. The simulation results clearly show an improvement in search operations when the proposed Aggregation Service is used, when compared to searches performed without it.

Virtual Organizations (VO) have complex interactions between their members, both industrial and logistics. Once industrial partners are selected, the VO should be complemented with the logistics partners that will deliver the produced goods between those partners. This paper presents a supporting decision method for selecting the most suitable logistics partners that consider not only capabilities, historical performance and availability, but also risks. In general, a risk is characterized by the potential of each logistic partner to do not fulfill VO’s business requirements and that can jeopardize its accomplishment. The method firstly evaluate and measure risks per partner, and collectively afterwards. Its formalization and examples are provided along the paper. Discussions are presented in the end.

Cross-domain network and service management is still a challenging task. Most network management solutions that exist today are only applicable to single, homogeneous domains. Due to their distribution and technology-independence, P2P overlays have very good potential to boost inter-domain network and service management. The proposed work intends to explore this potential in order to develop efficient, trusted and secure cross-domain management, with benefits in terms of performance, resilience and support for autonomic operation. This paper explains the main challenges in this respect, discusses the basic approach to be taken and identifies the contributions.

In an increasingly competitive market place, the development of collaborative networked environments has become a key factor to companies successfully leverage their business activities. Nevertheless, when these companies get involved in more volatile strategic networks, it is necessary to deal with additional risks that need to be identified, measured, and mitigated through a well defined process. In this sense, this paper aims to specify a method for risk analysis comprising a set of service providers (SPs) in a P2P Service Overlay Network (SON). In this applied, qualitative and essentially exploratory work, the proposed method assesses the level of risk present in a set of previously selected SPs using key performance indicators (KPIs), and measures the viability of a Virtual Organization (VO) formation using those selected SPs. A computational prototype was also specified and used to execute a set of tests to assess the proposed risk analysis method.

The Virtual Organization (VO) concept has emerged as one of the most promising forms of collaboration among companies by providing a way of sharing their costs, benefits and risks, in order to attend particular demands. Although these advantages, VOs face several risks that need to be identified, measured, and mitigated through a well defined process. In this way, this paper proposes a hybrid DEA-Fuzzy method for analyzing risk in VO formation. This method assesses the level of risk present in a set of previously selected Service Providers (SPs) using Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), providing a way to helping decide on the VO formation.

In an increasingly competitive market, small and medium enterprises have the temporarily option to divide their core competencies in sub-competences. In fact, this is the purpose of so-called virtual organizations (VOs), which aim to attend a particular goal joining partner forces. However, when these VOs are created, it is necessary to deal with the maximum number of participants involved in the process and the risk involved in these relationships, which should be measured through a well-defined process. This paper aims to present an approach to dimensioning the maximum number of participants involved in the formation of a VO composed of several service providers. This approach is based on the overall risk level of the participants and uses different risk analysis methods to assess the suitable number of participants to be part of a VO.

Cloud computing is a service model that allows hosting and on demand distribution of computing resources all around the world, via Internet. Thus, cloud computing has become a successful paradigm that has been adopted and incorporated into virtually all major known IT companies (e.g., Google, Amazon, Microsoft). Based on this success, a large number of new companies were competitively created as providers of cloud computing services. This fact hindered the clients’ ability to choose among those several cloud computing providers the most appropriate one to attend their requirements and computing needs. This work aims to specify a logical/mathematical multi-criteria scoring method able to select the most appropriate(s) cloud computing provider(s) to the user (customer), based on the analysis of performance indicator values desired by the customer and associated with every cloud computing provider that supports the demanded requirements. The method is a three stages algorithm that evaluates, scores, sorts and selects different cloud providers based on the utility of their performance indicators for each specific user of the method. An example of the method’s usage is given in order to illustrate its operation.

A Virtual Organization (VO) is a form of organization where a set of independent entities share resources, skills and risks in order to attend a collaboration opportunity. The integration between VO’s concept and cloud computing seems promising since VO participants use or provide their services in a cloud computing environment. Nevertheless, in this context of integration, the problem of trust between VO partners and cloud providers is highlighted. This is noteworthy since it’s necessary to select a reliable cloud provider for a VO business partner launch its service. Therefore, this work presents a confidence indicator model for cloud computing providers using the Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) method. For the evaluation of this work, we used Quality of Service indicators of public cloud service providers. Results presented and discussed show the generated confidence indicator can be a good criterion to help the VO’s manager to select reliable Cloud Computing providers to host VO partners during the VO creation process.
