Asian interchange: Korean-Hong Kong co-productions of the 1960s

Ae-Gyung Shim; Brian Yecies

ABSTRACT In the 1960s, during the first half of President Park Chung-hees term of authoritarian government, Korean film-makers pursued a range of international collaborations with one of the most active centres of the Asian film industry: Hong Kong. As a result of domestic economic, political and cultural restrictions, but encouraged by efforts to rapidly industrialize the Korean film industry, these activities involved participation in international film festivals, co-production partnerships, genre adaptations and remakes. This article explores how these official and unofficial partnerships fostered new cultural flows between these two budding Asian tigers, and how co-productions and remakes impacted the growth of the Korean film industry.
