Computational lexical semantics: Lexical functions of the Explanatory Combinatorial Dictionary for lexicalization in text generation

Margarita Alonso Ramos; Agnès Tutin; Guy Lapalme

In this paper, we show that the Lexical Functions (LFs) of the Explanatory Combinatorial Dictionary are well suited for addressing some lexical questions in text generation like collocations and textual phenomena. We first describe LFs and divide them into two subsets: paradigmatic LFs and syntagmatic LFs. In particular, we see how paradigmatic LFs can be used for coreferential relations and definite descriptions in text generation.

Generating Grammatical and Lexical Anaphora in Assembly Instructional Texts

Leila Kosseim; Agnès Tutin; Richard I. Kittredge; Guy Lapalme

In this paper, we discuss the problem of generating natural anaphora in assembly instructional texts. We first present a detailed account of grammatical and lexical anaphora and we examine a set of constraints for selecting these devices. As language is often redundant and an optimal referring expression is computationally prohibitive, we take the view that the generation of anaphora should be based on a thorough linguistic study and should lead to a natural choice, rather than an optimal one. We then present a text generation system built to evaluate the linguistic constraints. This component takes as input a specification of the sequence of actions to be performed in a cooking recipe and selects and produces the most appropriate anaphoric device to be used in the text.

Comparing Recurring Lexico-Syntactic Trees (RLTs) and Ngram Techniques for Extended Phraseology Extraction.

Agnès Tutin; Olivier Kraif

This paper aims at assessing to what extent a syntax-based method (Recurring Lexico-syntactic Trees (RLT) extraction) allows us to extract large phraseological units such as prefabricated routines, e.g. “as previously said” or “as far as we/I know” in scientific writing. In order to evaluate this method, we compare it to the classical ngram extraction technique, on a subset of recurring segments including speech verbs in a French corpus of scientific writing. Results show that the LRT extraction technique is far more efficient for extended MWEs such as routines or collocations but performs more poorly for surface phenomena such as syntactic constructions or fully frozen expressions.

Typologie des séquences lexicalisées à fonction discursive dans la perspective de la rédaction scientifique

Thi Thu Hoai Tran; Agnès Tutin; Cristelle Cavalla

Our research fits into a broader perspective in the field of phraseology (Legallois & Tutin, 2013). This article addresses multiword sequences with a discursive function, elements occurring in different genres but particularly common in our academic writings corpus. The acquisition of these lexical units proves essential for allophone students to build a consistent discourse. With the ultimate aim of establishing a support system to scientific writing, this paper presents the typology of discursive multiword markers built on functional criteria and a linguistic model adapted to NLP tools and other educational activities. This study analyzes the language used to feed didactic reflections. Keywords : discourse markers, linguistic descriptions, scientific writing, French for academic purposes
