The Role of Time in the Global Tourism Market - A Demand Perspective

The earliest western concept of leisure (Greek: schole) is credited to the Greek philosopher Aristotle who juxtaposed production activities performed from the necessity to labour (e.g. by slaves) with self-actualisation activities fit for free men, such as education, pursuance of arts and philosophy, contemplation, or the performance of political duties (de Grazia 1926). Aristotle was first to point out that time should be used in accordance with the values which determine the sense of human existence.

Postrzeganie czasu wolnego a kształtowanie przestrzeni rekreacji i przestrzeni turystycznej na obszarze miejskim

Celem autorek artykulu jest proba identyfikacji relacji pomiedzy zmianami w postrzeganiu czasu wolnego a kreowaniem przestrzeni rekreacji i przestrzeni turystycznej na obszarach miejskich. Autorki w szczegolności śledzą zmiany związane z tzw. trzecią falą (TOFFLER 2001), kompresją czasu (NIEZGODA 2017) oraz odejściem od tzw. synchronizacji. Ilustracją prowadzonych wcześniej rozwazan jest analiza aktywności rekreacyjnej mieszkancow i turystow w Szczecinie oraz proba identyfikacji relacji przestrzeni rekreacji i przestrzeni turystycznej. Wraz z postepującą kompresją czasu wolnego aktywnośc turystow w odwiedzanych obszarach staje sie podobna do form aktywności wolnoczasowej mieszkancow, co powoduje jej realizacje w tym samym otoczeniu. W przestrzeni miasta postepuje interferencja przestrzeni rekreacji i przestrzeni turystycznej, uniemozliwiająca ich rozdzielenie, ale nadal pozwalająca na wyodrebnienie pewnych podprzestrzeni, o wyzszej intensywności zachowan turystycznych lub rekreacyjnych.

Współudział konsumentów w tworzeniu produktu turystycznego

The purpose of the article is an analysis of the characteristics of a consumer participating in the creation of products, the so-called prosumers, as well as an analysis of factors facilitating such participation on the part of tourist enterprises. The discussion covers the tourist market. The method is a review of subject literature discussing the category of a prosumer from the perspective of a tourist market along with the authors’ interpretation. Categorized direct interviews with managers and employees having direct contact with customers in hotels and travel agencies, presenting appropriate experience (several years of work), were used in the empirical part. The research is of qualitative, explorative nature. In the article the category of a tourist market prosumer was defined and the changed CRM formula was suggested – customer relations management into CMR i.e. consumer management relations in the conditions of the discussed market. The exploratory analysis showed the stereotypical thinking about a customer, who is treated as: an offer purchaser and the source of information about his/her needs and expectations. The collected suggestions and opinions are used to construct customers’ involvement in the business issues of the studied companies, including the creation of new value. The article is of an empirical nature and represents a review in its theoretical part.

New opportunities for future tourism after 25 years of political and socioeconomictransformation–foresight in Poland’stourism planning

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to present the changes in political and socioeconomic conditions after 25 years of transformation and how it provided to adopt new methodology in tourism planning. It shows the possibilities offered by the use of the foresight process in planning the development of tourism in Poland. Since one of the main foresight goals is to identify trends, the paper takes attempt to verify trends that occurred in Poland after 1989 and if they have now and will have in the near future influence on Polish tourism. Detailed objective is to characterize the systemic transformation and its impact on the tourism economy. Design/methodology/approach Paper is the review, which used literature, legislation and strategic documents query. It also includes comparative analysis. Findings The analysis of the political and economic changes that have taken place in Poland over the last 25 years shows that they were positive for the development of tourism base. The impact of globalization and global trends is now clearly noticeable also in Poland. Political and economic changes allow the use of foresight methodology in studies on the future of tourism while maintaining its main attributes: anticipation, participation, action, networking, vision. Research limitations/implications The analysis included the impact of political changes and social trends on the tourist economy. Proposals that show the positive aspects of these changes relate to tourism and present extensive opportunities to create scenarios, both at the national and regional levels. Practical implications The analysis forms the basis for the activities of tourism entities in Poland. It shows the characteristics for the future of the tourism market particularly the demand side. Social implications The analysis of changes in systemic and social trends enables anticipation of changes in tourism as a social phenomenon. Originality/value The paper presents the historical basis for the development of tourism in Poland after political changes in relation to the planning of tourism by using the methodology of foresight. It also presents these phenomena and social trends that have an impact on the development of tourism.
