Simulation-Based Military Training

Agostino G. Bruzzone; Marina Massei

Simulation is strongly related to the Military Sector, indeed Computer Simulation has been effectively applied to Defense and Aerospace since the end of the World War II and John McLeod, founder of the Society for Computer Simulation International (SCS), applied it to Rocket Science and Aeronautics in early ’50, quite a while before the advent of digital computers (McLeod in Simulation: the dynamic modeling of ideas and systems with computers. McGraw-Hill, New York, 1968). Today, after half a century, military users still represent the major stream for MS in addition, it is an area where competition (not necessarily commercial) pushes the innovative solutions to the edge, so all these aspects promote simulation as leading science to achieve successful results. This chapter is focused on New Challenges and Opportunities in this domain.

Anticipating the Chaotic Behaviour of Industrial Systems Based on Stochastic, Event‐Driven Simulations

Agostino G. Bruzzone; Roberto Revetria; Simone Simeoni; Simone Viazzo; Alessandra Orsoni

In logistics and industrial production managers must deal with the impact of stochastic events to improve performances and reduce costs. In fact, production and logistics systems are generally designed considering some parameters as deterministically distributed. While this assumption is mostly used for preliminary prototyping, it is sometimes also retained during the final design stage, and especially for estimated parameters (i.e. Market Request). The proposed methodology can determine the impact of stochastic events in the system by evaluating the chaotic threshold level. Such an approach, based on the application of a new and innovative methodology, can be implemented to find the condition under which chaos makes the system become uncontrollable. Starting from problem identification and risk assessment, several classification techniques are used to carry out an effect analysis and contingency plan estimation. In this paper the authors illustrate the methodology with respect to a real industrial case: ...

Simulation Based Design of Innovative Quick Response Processes in Cloud Supply Chain Management for “Slow Food” Distribution

Agostino G. Bruzzone; Marina Massei; Francesco Longo; Davide Scalzo; Carlo Martini; Jonathan Villanueva; Luca Bucchianica

This paper proposes an innovative business model for making accessible premium quality food worldwide, in respect with its origins and cultural background; the authors present a simulation approach to design the general architecture and the supply chain processes devoted to achieve this result as well as the description of the Supply Chain Architecture. The authors introduced the concept of data consistency for processing reliability of the input over the uncertainty of market demand as well as the influence of stochastic factors. The paper proposes this case study as a good example of using these innovative techniques integrated with simulation.
