Compact planar antenna for UWB applications

Rezaul Azim; Ahmed Toaha Mobashsher; Mohammad Tariqul Islam; Norbahiah Misran

In this paper, a planar antenna for UWB applications has been proposed. The antenna consists of a square patch, a partial ground plane and a slot on the ground plane. The proposed antenna is easy to be integrated with microwave circuitry for low manufacturing cost. The flat type antenna has a compact structure and the total size is 14.5×14.5mm2. The result shows that the impedance bandwidth (VSWR≤ 2) of the proposed antenna is 12.49 GHz (2.95 to 15.44 GHz), which is equivalent to 135.8%. Details of the proposed compact planar UWB antenna design is presented and discussed.

Design of a compact dual band microstrip antenna for Ku-band application

Norbahiah Misran; Mohammad Tariqul Islam; Nurmahirah Muhamad Yusob; Ahmed Toaha Mobashsher

A new design of dual band compact microstrip antenna is proposed for Ku-band applications. Dual band is achieved using three pairs of thin slits from the sides of a rectangular patch and feeding with a microstrip feedline. The antenna has a compact structure and the total size is 9.50mm by 10mm by 0.254mm. The result shows that the return loss of −23.83dB is achieved at the first resonant frequency of 12.54GHz and -14.04dB is obtained at the second resonant frequency of 14.15GHz. The antenna gives a stable radiation performance with gain greater than 4dBi over the frequency band.

Design analysis of compact dual-band microstrip RFID reader antenna

Ahmed Toaha Mobashsher; Norbahiah Misran; Mohammad Tariqul Islam

RFID excelled in automatic identification and data collection industry through its speed, agility and endurance. An analysis of the design of a single-layered microstrip antenna comprising a single patch on the top layer with slots on the radiating edges to obtain dual-band RFID reader operation at free ISM bands of 2.45GHz and 5.8GHz is presented in this letter. The antenna has a compact appearance and with the help of single microstrip feed line the radiating patch has a dimension of 19mm× 29mm. A good impedance bandwidth of 115MHz has been achieved form 2.395GHz to 2.50GHz for the lower band, while the upper band covers 600MHz (from 5.40GHz to 6.00GHz). The proposed antenna shows stable radiation characteristics for the frequencies of interest. Furthermore, an extensive parametric study was performed to realize the relationship between the resonance frequencies in the two bands and different parameters which is helpful for advancement of the antenna design.

RFID Technology: Perspectives and Technical Considerations of Microstrip Antennas for Multi-Band RFID Reader Operation

Ahmed Toaha Mobashsher; Mohammad Tariqul Islam; Norbahiah Misran

This chapter presents a comprehensive review of RFID technology concerning the antennas and propagation for multi-band operation. The technical considerations of antenna parameters are also discussed in details in order to provide a complete realization of the parameters in pragmatic approach to the antenna designing process, which primarily includes scattering parameters and radiation characteristics. The antenna literature is also critically overviewed to identify the possible solutions of the multi-band microstrip antennas to utilize in multi-band RFID reader operation. In the literature dual-band antennas are principally discussed since they are ideal to realize and describe multi-band antenna mechanism. However, it has been seen that these techniques can be combined to enhance multi-band antennas with wider bandwidths. Last but not least, the high gain dualband antennas and limitations have been described and it is realized that the conventional feeding technique might limit the performance of multi-band antennas to only one frequency.

Small multi-band microstrip antenna for wireless applications

Mohammad Tariqul Islam; Ahmed Toaha Mobashsher; Norbahiah Misran

A simple microstrip line fed antenna with thin substrate is proposed in this letter for multi-band wireless applications. The multi-band characteristic was achieved by overlapping an annular slot antenna with two concentric fan shaped patches. The antenna demonstrates three wide impedance bandwidths (VSWR ≤ 2) of 36.3, 63.4 and 25.5% with stable polarization and radiation characteristics.

Recent developments of radio frequency identification tag antennas

Ahmed Toaha Mobashsher; Mohammad Tariqul Islam; Norbahiah Misran

Radio frequency identification (RFID) excelled in automatic identification and data collection industry through its speed, agility and endurance. RFID of objects and people and remote control of devices has become very popular in logistics, inventory management and bio-engineering applications. RFID system which works on the basis of alternating electromagnetic fields mostly consists of two vital components - a RFID tag (transponder) and a RFID interrogator (reader). As this is a contact less technology, both of these components should have independent antennas to transfer data among them. This paper reviews the recent developments of the tag antennas focusing different technologies and architectures in recent years on the basis of recent published manuscripts and patents. Moreover, projections on future development trends are also provided.
