Myung-Ock Chae; Hae Ok Jeon; Ahrin Kim

The purpose of this study was to review the literature and examine the effects on non-pharmacological depression intervention for middle-aged women in Korea. This systematic review analyzed the literature from 2006 to September, 2015. The existing literature was searched in the electronic databases in RISS, KISS and DBPia using the following key words: middle-aged women and depression, menopause and depression, climacterium and depression. Two hundred eighty studies were found through the database. According to PICOTS-SD, twelve studies were included for analysis. Among the twelve studies, four studies were conducted in the nursing field. Six studies were randomized controlled trials. Aerobic exercise, laughter therapy, meditation, aroma massage, counseling and art therapy were performed as non-pharmacological interventions for depression in Korean middle-aged women. The length of each session ranged from 20 to 120 minutes. The intervention period varied from 2 to 24 weeks, and the total number of the interventions ranged from 8 to 72 times. They influenced not only depression, but also physical aspects that are associated with obesity and psychosocial variables, such as anxiety, quality of life, life satisfaction, etc.

The Influence of Health Behaviors and Sleep related Factors on Cognitive Function in the Elderly Hypertensive Patients

Ahrin Kim; Hae Ok Jeon

This study examined effects of health behaviors and sleep related factor on cognitive function in the elderly hypertensive patients. Data were collected through a face to face interview survey with structured questionnaire form 140 elderly with hypertension (age≥65 years) from February 5 to May 1, 2013. Research instruments included Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index(PSQI), Epworth Sleepiness Scale(ESS) and Korean version the Mini-Mental State Examination(MMSE-K). Cognitive function was negatively related to degradation in quality of sleep(r=-.29, p<.001). Sleep duration were negatively related to body mass index(r=-.18, p=.032) and degradation in quality of sleep(r=-.59, p<.001). Sleep duration was positively related to daytime sleepiness(r=.22, p=.008). Hierarchical multiple regression showed that age, education levels and living arrangement were associated with cognitive function(F=8.56, p<.001, Adjusted R 2 =.14). After controlling for demographic characteristics and health behaviors, degradation in quality of sleep(β=-.27, p=.008) was identified as significant predictors of cognitive function. This final model explained 17.0% of the cognitive function in the elderly hypertensive patients(F=4.09, p<.001). Therefore, as a strategy improving cognitive function of the elderly with hypertension, therapeutic intervention should be developed to improve quality of sleep considering age, education levels and living arrangement.

Strategies for reestablishing the role of Public Health Care Posts in Korea

Kyoung A Lee; Eunshil Yim; Ahrin Kim

This study aims to identify the current public health care posts status, analyze the surrounding environment, and suggest the future role of public health care posts. To redefine the function of the public health care posts, the public health care posts were classified into four types. The classification was based on the existence of a medical facility in the region, the arrival time to medical institutions in case of emergency, and the frequency of emergencies. As the result of this study, 3.1% of the total public health care posts were required to strengthen the function of the clinic medical care and 9.5% of the public health care posts should maintain the current medical care function. 54.9% of the public health care posts should strengthen the health promotion function and 32.5% of the public health care posts should be transferred to health promotion role. Most public health care posts need to expand their role from medical care to health promotion, so institutional support should be provided.

Effects of Health Behaviors, Premenstrual Coping and Premenstrual Syndrome Symptoms on Subjective Happiness in Female College Students

Ahrin Kim; Hae Ok Jeon; Myung-Ock Chae

This study examined the relationships between health behavior, premenstrual coping, premenstrual syndrome symptoms, and subjective happiness of female college students. The data were collected through self-report questionnaires between March 7 and April 20, 2016. Participants were comprised of a convenience sample of 122 female college students. Stepwise multiple regression analysis revealed subjective health status (β=.23, p<.011), premenstrual syndrome symptoms (β=-.22, p<.012), and average length of menstrual period (β=-.17, p<.044) to be significant predictors of subjective happiness in female college students. These variables accounted for 14.0% of subjective happiness scores. It is meaningful that premenstrual syndrome symptoms and average length of menstrual period affected the subjective happiness in female college students. Therefore, to facilitate subjective happiness in female college students, efficient management and intervention regarding premenstrual syndrome symptoms and general health are required.

Effects of Maternity Nursing Simulation using High-fidelity Patient Simulator for Undergraduate Nursing Students

Ahrin Kim

.Abstract This study examined the effectiveness of maternity nursing simulations using a high-fidelity simulator forundergraduate nursing students. One-group pretest-posttest design was used. The simulation-based education programconsisted of three sessions, including the clinical scenarios about prenatal, childbearing and postpartum care. The program provided for 3 weeks in November 2014. Data was collected before and after the simulation education usingself-reported questionnaires, which included simulation effectiveness, problem solving ability, communication skills and self-confidence in maternity nursing. The data of 83 participants were analyzed using the IBM SPSS 20.0 program. After simulation education, the overall score of the simulation effectiveness was 17.4 out of 26.0. Communication skill (t=4.58, p=<.001) and self-confidence in maternity nursing (t=9.70, p=<.001) increased significantly in the posttest. On the other hand, there was no significant change in the problem solving ability. Thesimulation effectiveness correlated significantly with the problem solving ability (r=.494, p<.001), communication skill(r=.361, p<.001), and self-confidence in maternity nursing (r=.497, p<.001) after simulation-based education. These findings suggest that the high-fidelity simulation in maternity nursing education could be used not only to enhancethe nursing competency, but also to deal with the limitations of the clinical practicum in the current situation.
