Abstract Electrophoretic banding patterns of eight enzyme systems in Solenopsis xyloni, S. germinata and their hybrid were studied. Repression of paternal alleles was found in aldehyde oxidase, isocitrate dehydrogenase, leucine amino peptidase and malic enzyme.

Abstract Four hexokinase loci were found in honey bees. The HK-1 locus with two alleles was found in pupae and in the head, thorax and abdomen of adults. HK-11, HK-12 and HK-13 were found only in the immature stages. HK-11 and HK-12 are monomorphic. Gene duplication is suggested for the polymorphic locus HK-13 with two-band homozygotes and four-band heterozygotes. The Africanized honey bee specific proteins were not found in the larval or pupal stage of Africanized honey bees. In the audlt, they were weakly present in the head, present in the thorax and absent in the abdomen.

Abstract Four native honey bee proteins (AMP-1, -2, -3, -4) were detected on the IEF gel by the polyclonal antiserum at 1:1000 dilution in immunoblotting. AMP-1 and/or AMP-2 were found in all Africanized honey bees (AHB). AMP-3 was found in 88% of AHB. All European honey bees (EHB) had only AMP-4. However, AMP-4 was also found in 53% of AHB. The same antiserum detected three denatured proteins on the SDS-PAGE gel with M r s around 39,000, 42,000 and 60,000. All three were found in AHB and EHB.

Abstract Using hexokinase and malate dehydrogenase as genetic markers, it was found that Ceratina calcarata and C. dupla interbred only occasionally in nature where they were sympatric. Therefore, they should be considered as two bona fide species, even though females are morphologically identical.
