that are not easily explained in terms of race, ethnicity, or religion. Can we see this very capaciousness as proof of the insidious quality of liberal governmentality? Perhaps. But at a time when appeals to purity and exclusion are now very much in the ascendancy in Japan as elsewhere, it is surely important to acknowledge more fully what Hankins rightly identifies as the generative possibilities embedded in the labor of multiculturalism.
