Following total maxillectomy for maxillary cancer, facial reconstruction was performed using a latissimus dorsi myocutaneous island flap. Postreconstructive deformity was studied in 10 patients. In 5 patients, after simple total maxillectomy the inner raw surface of the facial skin and orbito was covered by the flap, and the other extended total maxillectomy patients where the orbital contents and facial skin were involved, reconstruction was by means of the folded flap. In the patients with simple total maxillectomy, cicatricial contracture of the facial skin and cicatricial ectropion of the lower eyelid were quite small, and in the patients with extended total maxillectomy, reconstructed facial skin did not give rise to cicatricial contracture.

The body sway of the patients with unilateral and bilateral Ménières disease was recorded by using a cephalograph and a stabilometer, and analyzed with a microcomputer. The results show that the locus type, locus area and locus length traced by the heads center and the bodys center of gravity are useful parameters of the body sway, representing the characteristics of peripheral vestibular disorders. The noteworthy characteristics are shown in the right-and-left type and forward-and-backward type in statokinesigram, in the significant differences of locus area and/or locus length between the head movement and the movement of the center of gravity, and the change of the averaged divisional frequencies of the body sway with eye-closing.

Three cases of parapharyngeal abscess are reported. Case 1 in a 71-year-old male was caused by acute suppurative parotitis. Case 2 in a 60-year-old female was caused by peritonsillitis, suspected to be by anaerobic bacteria. Case 3 in a 75-year-old male was caused by pharyngitis with diabetes mellitus. Case 3 required surgical drainage by the external approach. Computed tomography was useful for localizing pathological involvement, and ultrasonography was sensitive for detection of pus within an inflammatory neck mass.
