Development and testing of the suspension system for a flywheel battery

Abstract The purpose of this study is to develop a suspension system for flywheel energy storage, that is, a flywheel battery (FWB), on electrical or hybrid electrical vehicles (EV, HEV). If the FWB is operated on vehicles, the gyrodynamics increases the loads of the rotor support bearing and the occupied space of the FWB. In order to eliminate the influence of the gyrodynamics, this paper presents a suspension system composed of a gimbal, actuators and a gain-scheduling controller. Furthermore, the simulation and the experimental results shown in this paper confirm the validity of the proposed system.
