31.3: Viewing Angle Controllable LCD using Variable Optical Compensator and Variable Diffuser

Yuzo Hisatake; Yasushi Kawata; Akio Murayama

We have developed a dual-use-LCD, which can switch viewing angle mode between the wide viewing angle mode and the narrow viewing angle mode. In the narrow viewing angle mode, this display prevents viewing from more than 45 degrees angle. Furthermore, the power consumption is 1/3 of the wide viewing angle mode.

Invited Lecture. Matrix liquid-crystal display device technologies

Shoichi Matsumoto; Hitoshi Hatoh; Akio Murayama

Abstract Our recent studies of ferroelectric chiral smectic and super-twisted nematic (ST) multiplexed-matrix liquid-crystal displays (LCDs) and a thin-film-transistor (TFT) active-matrix twisted nematic (TN) LCD are presented, mainly in terms of liquid-crystal material and cell optimization. This is based on a consideration of their electro-optical characteristics. In addition the matrix LCD devices developed through these studies are introduced, including a 12-inch-diagonal video-rate multicolour ferroelectric LCD, a highly multiplexed genuine achromatic ST LCD with a single cell and a 4-inch-diagonal full-colour a-Si TFT-addressed TN LCD for a video display.

Electro-optic behaviour of low molar mass felc's doped with liquid crystal polymers

Garry Lester; H. J. Coles; Akio Murayama; Masahito Ishikawa

Abstract In this paper we present data on the electro-optic switching tilt angle memorisation properties of polymer doped ferroelectric liquid crystalline mixtures. Side chain polysiloxane polymers at concentrations up to 11% w/w were added to the low molar mass mixtures ZLI-4237–000 and -100. The response times of the 11% w/w polymer/ZLI-4237–100 mixtures were identical to those of the neat ZLI-4237–000 mixture. The memory properties were studied using bipolar pulses before and after the samples were subjected to mechanical shock. The polymer containing mixtures retained their memory properties after mechanical deformation whereas the neat low molar mass mixtures did not.

Multiplexed ferroelectric liquid crystal display

Abstract The studies on the fundamental requirements for realization of a multiplexed ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC) display have been presented as follows: (1) The new classes of 2,5-diphenylpyrimidine FLCs are useful as a blending component for broadening the Sc temperature range and improving the switching response time. (2) A FLC material with the Iso-N-SA-Sc phase transition sequence as well as the long Sc and N helical pitches is required to achieve the homogeneous alignment in a Sc phase. (3) Among the FLC cells with various alignment layers, the PI/PI coated cell exhibits the symmetric and steep bistability threshold behavior. (4) The parameters to evaluate the multiplexing capability of a FLC cell are introduced and applied to select a suitable combination of alignment layers for highly multiplexing. (5) The parameters are also used to evaluate a favorable drive method among the drive schemes proposed so far for multiplexing a FLC cell. On the basis of the above studies, a multicolor ferroele...

Synthesis and Properties of Optically Active Phenoxypropionates Having Various Cores

Shin-Ichi Sugita; Susumu Toda; Tsutomu Teraji; Akio Murayama; Masahito Ishikawa

Abstract Optically active phenoxypropionates having a variety of cores were synthesized and the effect of the different core structures on the spontaneous polarization (Ps) values was investigated. The results indicate that the core structure has a great influence on the Ps value and compound 3 in which a chiral group attached to the 5-phenyl side of the 2,5-diphenylpyrimidine core showed the largest Ps of 240 nC/cm2. The ability as a chiral dopant for ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC) were also evaluated. It was found that compound 3 was the most interesting, because the doping of compound 3 induced large Ps and wide tilt angle and this FLC mixture showed short response time. Moreover, the Sc range of host liquid crystal mixture are slightly extended by doping of compound 3.

Synthesis and Mesomorphic Properties of Ferroelectric Liquid Crystals Bearing Trans 4-Alkoxycyclohexylpyrimidines

Shin-Ichi Sugita; Susumu Toda; Takashi Yoshiyasu; Tsutomu Teraji; Akio Murayama

Abstract A homologous series of chiral trans-4-alkoxycyclohexylpyrimidines were synthesized and their mesomorphic properties were evaluated with a DSC and a polarizing microscope. It was found that the presence of a trans-1, 4-disubstituted cyclohexane ring strongly promoted the formation of the SB phase and seems to suppress the formation of the chiral smectic C (Sc*) phase.

A single-cell high-quality black and white ST LCD

Shoichi Matsumoto; Hitoshi Hatoh; Akio Murayama; Tomiaki Yamamoto; Susumu Kondo; S. Kamagami

A genuine achromatic supertwist liquid-crystal display (ST LCD) characterized by a single-cell construction has been developed by inserting an optical retardation film between the liquid crystal cell and polarizer. The device realizes not only a high contrast ratio and a good viewing angle, comparable to that of a double-cell ST LCD, but also light weight, thin design, and low cost due to the single cell construction. The electrooptical characteristics and display performance of the LCD are described.<<ETX>>

A truly achromatic ST liquid-crystal display (LCD) characterized by single-cell construction has been developed by inserting an optical retardation film between the liquid-crystal cell and the polarizer. It provides not only a high contrast ratio and a good viewing angle, comparable to a double-cell ST LCD, but also such excellent features as light weight, thin design, and low cost due to the single-cell construction. >

P‐37: Study of the Ergonomics Requirement for Color Difference in Electronic Displays

Yuzo Hisatake; Azusa Ikeda; Hideki Ito; Masaki Obi; Yasushi Kawata; Akio Murayama

We have studied the dependency on color chroma and hue for allowable and optimal levels to color difference. The deeper the chroma, the wider the areas of optimal and allowable limits. The plot of each limit for deep RGB on the chromaticity diagram shows that the width for chroma is wider than that of hue area.

P-38: Comparison of the Odiousness by Various False Colour Motion Blurs in LCDs Caused by Various Factors

Yuzo Hisatake; Hideki Ito; Masaki Obi; Yasushi Kawata; Akio Murayama

We have evaluated the odiousness by various false colour motion blurs in LCDs with respect to each factor to generate the blur. In the case of different colour hue blur, we found that the optimal and allowance levels of odiousness can be expressed by the average of PBET value.
