NUMERICAL INVESTIGATION OF ECCENTRICALLY LOADED HIGH-STRENGTH CONCRETE TIED COLUMNS

J. Xie; James G. MacGregor; Alaa E. Elwi

High-strength concrete tied columns are becoming increasingly popular in engineering practice. Little is known, however, about the ductility and postpeak behavior of tied columns with concrete strength higher than 60 MPa. This paper presents a numerical simulation offour high-strength concrete tied columns. The columns, with compressive strengths of 59 to 124 MPa, had rectangular cross sections with various layouts of transverse reinforcement. The columns were subjected to eccentric longitudinal loads. The full load-deformation response is verified against the experimental observation. The stress distribution pattern in the tied columns and the stress in the ties are determined numerically. The failure mechanism, involving the strain softening of cover, yielding of the ties, and the formation of triaxial stress state in column cores, is investigated and studied.

Performance of HighStrength Concrete Tied Columns A Parametric Study

J. Xie; Alaa E. Elwi; James G. MacGregor

With increasing use of high-strength concrete tied columns in structural engineering, it becomes necessary to examine the applicability of related sections of the current design codes. This paper presents a parametric study based on numerical analysis of high-strength concrete tied columns subjected to eccentric compressive loading. A total of 21 rectangular tied columns with concrete strengths of 37.5 to 75 MPa are numerically investigated. The parameters studied are configuration, size and yield strength of ties, concrete strength, depth of cover and amount of longitudinal reinforcement. The strength and ductility of the tied columns are investigated, and the related design code sections are examined.
