Abstract We make a careful analysis of the constraints on supergravity parameters from the requirement of SU(2)×U(1) symmetry breaking. Since we obtain fully analytic solutions to the relevant renormalization group equations, we are able to explore the whole range of parameters. Breaking electroweak symmetry with a light top quark leads to a strong correlation between the dimensionless parameters and the mass ratios in the supergravity lagrangian. However, the overall mass scale, e.g. m 3 2 , is not fixed by this requirements. The bound on the lightest neutral Higgs boson is reexamined. The lightest squark is usually an s-top, but we easily find cases where it is a s-bottom. Unfortunately the low-energy constraints provide no useful guidelines for experimentalists.

total cross-sections at high energies show unexpected behaviour for cross-section differences. ρ-A2 exchange degeneracy seems to fail completely at FNAL energies. In analysing this effect one is led to question the procedure used at Serpukhov and FNAL to obtain neutron cross-sections from deuterium data. Starting from what appears to be a reasonable phenomenological hypothesis concerning the Glauber correction, one solves an incompatibility between the Serpukhov and FNAL data. At the same time, the above-mentioned effect is strongly reinforced, and is seen to originate in a non-Regge behaviour of the «A2» contribution, which changes sign aroundpL=40 GeV/c. Such an unexpected behaviour could be due to a new term, small at lower energies but which asymptotically dominates over the Regge pole.RiassuntoLe misure delle sezioni d’urto totali
