The melon, Cucumis melo L. is an ancient plant, likely originating from the tropical Africa/Middle-East regions. It then spread out to the Mediterranean, India and Asia (Withaker & Davis, 1962) from where a large diversity of fruit types have now emerged (Kirkbride, 1993). Within the Cucumis melo species, a wide range of ripening behaviour exists. For example, some varieties tend to have a sharp climacteric respiration associated with a fast fruit ripening and abscission rate (Lyons et al., 1962). In contrast, other varieties do not abscise at maturity, and the climacteric may be absent (Nukaya et al., 1986) or extended over several days (Pratt et al., 1977).
