Abstract We investigate intercellular insulin dynamics in an array of diffusively coupled pancreatic islet β -cells. The cells are connected via gap junction coupling, where nearest neighbor interactions are included. Through the multiple scale expansion in the semi-discrete approximation, we show that the insulin dynamics can be governed by the complex Ginzburg–Landau equation. The localized solutions of this equation are reported. The results suggest from the biophysical point of view that the insulin propagates in pancreatic islet β -cells using both temporal and spatial dimensions in the form of localized modulated waves.

The modulational instability in the three coupled α-polypeptide chains of a collagen molecule is investigated. Choosing symmetric and asymmetric solutions, and applying the so-called rotating-wave approximation, we describe the dynamics of the system by the discrete nonlinear Schrodinger (DNLS) equation. The linear stability analysis of the continuous wave solution is performed. The numerical simulations show the generation of trains of solitonic structures in the lattice with increasing amplitude as time progresses. The effect of damping and noise forces of the physiological temperature (T = 300 K) introduces an erratic behavior to the formed patterns, reinforcing the idea that the energy used in metabolic processes is confined to specific regions for efficiency.

Abstract We investigate the nonlinear dynamics of a damped Peyrard-Bishop DNA model taking into account long-range interactions with distance dependence | l | − s on the elastic coupling constant between different DNA base pairs. Considering both Stokes and long-range hydrodynamical damping forces, we use the discrete difference operator technique and show in the short wavelength modes that the lattice equation can be governed by the complex Ginzburg-Landau equation. We found analytically that the technique leads to the correct expression for the breather soliton parameters. We found that the viscosity makes the amplitude of the breather to damp out. We compare the approximate analytic results with numerical simulations for the value s = 3 (dipole-dipole interactions).

We have investigated the impact of the fractional order derivative on the dynamics of modulated waves of a homogeneous DNA chain that is based on site-dependent finite stacking and pairing enthalpies. We have reformulated the classical Lagrangian of the system by including the coordinates depending on the Riemann-Liouville time derivative of fractional order γ. From the Lagrange equation, we derived the fractional nonlinear equation of motion. We obtained the fractional breather as solutions by means of a fractional perturbation technique. The impact of the fractional order is investigated and we showed that depending on the values of γ, there are three types of waves that propagate in DNA. We have static breathers, breathers of small amplitude and high velocity, and breathers of high amplitude and small velocity.
