Postoperative radiation therapy was given for medullary carcinoma of the thyroid in 5 patients. Moderately high doses of radiation achieved local control. Four patients died of metastatic disease. The favorable response of this tumor to doxorubicin suggests that both postoperative irradiation and chemotherapy should be used in its treatment.

Testicular infiltration developed in 6 of 56 boys with lymphoblastic leukemia. All exhibited platelet counts under 100,000, indicating poor prognosis. Patients were treated with vincristine, prednisone, and craniomemingeal prophylaxis (2,400 rads/12 fx) extending to the C2 level. Only 3 patients did not suffer recurrence of testicular disease during their multiple leukemic relapses. Alternate treatment courses are suggested.

The occurrence of hypertrophic pulmonary osteoarthropathy (HPO) with primary squamous-cell carcinoma of the cervix is described. Radiotherapy to the pelvis (2,000 rads in two weeks) produced relief of symptoms. In 3 other cases, HPO was seen in patients with primary pulmonary adenocarcinoma. Joint symptoms were relieved by radiotherapy to the primary in 2 and surgical extirpation of the tumor in the third. All had progression of the tumor, with thoracic recurrence in 2 and brain metastases in 1, but joint symptoms did not recur after initial relief was obtained.

Prophylactic irradiation of the regional nodes following mastectomy for breast carcinoma is a widely accepted practice. It often induces apical pulmonary fibrosis. A case of bronchogenic carcinoma arising in this fibrotic area, and its relationship to such radiotherapy, is discussed.
