The experimental simulation in the dog of the cyanosis and hypertrophic osteoarthropathy which are associated with congenital heart disease

Milton Mendlowitz; Alan Leslie

Abstract 1. 1. A procedure for anastomosis of the pulmonary artery to the left auricle in dogs is described. 2. 2. In the successful experiments, this procedure reproduced the circulatory derangements found in the cyanotic type of congenital heart disease. 3. 3. In one experiment, hypertrophic osteoarthropathy developed, and was apparently attributable to increased systemic blood flow.

Inspiratory-expiratory vital capacity test of pulmonary function

Alan Leslie

Abstract 1. 1. A modified technic of vital capacity testing is described. This test can be performed without undue exertion by severely ill patients. It provides information about pulmonary function not available from the conventional expiratory vital capacity procedure, and closely reflects the clinical condition of patients with impairment of expiration. It is a simple test for clinical use and not an elaborate laboratory procedure. 2. 2. The results of tests on thirty-four patients 0with pulmonary emphysema, twenty-five normal subjects, fifteen patients with heart disease and four obese individuals are presented.

Sweat test simplified for clinical use

Alan Leslie; Melvin H. Levin

Abstract A simplified method for obtaining thermal sweat is described. Analysis of sweat obtained by this method affords a valid clinical index of one phase of adrenal cortical activity.

Oxygen Saturation of Arterial Blood in Jaundice Complicating Lobar Pneumonia.

Frederick H. King; Alan Leslie

Summary (1) Twenty-nine cases of lobar pneumonia were studied with a view to determining any relationship between anoxemia and jaundice in this disease. (2) No obvious relationship could be demonstrated between anoxemia and the presence of jaundice or disturbed liver function as determined by the bilirubin excretion test.
