Abstract This supplement to the 1976 edition of “Review of particle properties”, Particle Data Group [Rev. Mod. Phys. 48, No. 2, Part II (1976)], contains tabulations of experimental data bearing on the “new particles” and related topics; categories covered include charmed particles, ψs and their decay products, and heavy leptons. Errata to the previous edition are also given.

Study of the I = 2 Σπ system in π + N interactions

G.R. Kalbfleisch; Gideon Alexander; O. I. Dahl; Donald H. Miller; Alan Rittenberg; Gerald A. Smith

A study of the effective-mass distributions for systems recoiling against mesons (k/sup +/) produced both in pi /sup -/ + p and pi /sup -/ + n interactions is reported. Although all the known energetically accessible resonances are produced the data show no systematic enhancement that can be identified as arising from an I = 2 Y pi resonant state. A more favorable situation exists for SIGMA /sup -/ pi /sup 0/ and SIGMA /sup 0/ pi /sup -/ systems recoi ling against mesons(k/sup +/). The effective-mass distributions for all two-body final states produced in association with mesons(k/sup +/) are plotted. (C.E.S.) perimentally observed nucleon-nucleon scattering. Requirements of unitarity were not imposed, and the dispersion relations depend only on causality and the empirical spectrum of masses, spins, parities, and coupling constants. (C.E.S.)

Finding a rational nomenclature for mesons and baryons

R. M. Barnett; R. N. Cahn; G. Gidal; Alan Rittenberg; T. G. Trippe; Charles G Wohl; G.P. Yost; Frank C. Porter; J. J. Hernandez; L. Montanet; Matts Roos; N. A. Törnqvist; M. Aguilar‐Bernitez; G. J. Feldman

A history of the Particle Data Group’s efforts to find a rational and systematic convention for naming mesons and baryons is given. Several versions of our proposal are reviewed, and name changes which would occur are summarized. Some of the mail we have received is described. We hope to stimulate additional feedback.
