room testing handbooks as those of Harrison (1983) and Madsen (1983). The book consists of four main parts. The first, entitled ’An overview’, deals with such basic matters as the purposes of evaluation, different types of foreign language test (here listed as: achievement, proficiency, diagnostic and aptitude tests), some criteria according to which tests are judged (validity, reliability, comprehensiveness and practicality), and the uses to which test results can be put. The second part, ’The multiple roles of the classroom teacher’, in fact deals with two roles: those of informal test writer and user, and of fomal test user. The discussion of the former role in Chapter 7 gives the authors an opportunity to run fairly quickly through such things
