New tetrathia[7]helicene-based (7-TH-based) gold(I) complexes 6 and 7 have been readily prepared by reaction of the respective phosphine ligands 2 and 3 with Au(tht)Cl in a 1:1 and 1:2 molar ratio, respectively. These complexes have been fully characterized by analytical and spectroscopic techniques as well as quantum chemical calculations. The molecular structure of dinuclear complex 7 has been determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, showing a gold-gold interaction of 3.1825(3) Å and a significant contraction of the 7-TH total dihedral angle. Au(I) complex 7 displays luminescence emission at room and low temperature in diluted solution and in the solid state. Quantum chemical calculations show that the luminescence emission at room temperature is primarily due to slightly perturbed fluorescence emission from purely ππ* excited states of the conjugated helicene scaffold. At 77 K phosphorescence emission is displayed as well. Preliminary studies on the use of 6 and 7 as catalysts in typical Au(I)-catalyzed cycloisomerizations have demonstrated the reactivity of these systems in the intramolecular allene hydroarylations and the hydroxycarboxylation of allene-carboxylates.

Three NIR-emitting neutral Ir(III) complexes [Ir(iqbt)2 (dpm)] (1), [Ir(iqbt)2 (tta)] (2), and [Ir(iqbt)2 (dtdk)] (3) based on the 1-(benzo[b]thiophen-2-yl)-isoquinolinate (iqtb) were synthesized and characterized (dpm=2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-3,5-heptanedionate; tta=2-thienoyltrifluoroacetonate; dtdk=1,3-di(thiophen-2-yl)propane-1,3-dionate). The compounds emit between λ=680 and 850 nm with high luminescence quantum yields (up to 16 %). By combining electrochemistry, photophysical measurements, and computational modelling, the relationship between the structure, energy levels, and properties were investigated. NIR-emitting, solution-processed phosphorescent organic light-emitting devices (PHOLEDs) were fabricated using the complexes. The devices show remarkable external quantum efficiencies (above 3 % with 1) with negligible efficiency roll-off values, exceeding the highest reported values for solution-processible NIR emitters.

Electroluminescent orthofused thiophene dye embedded in polyvinylcarbazole

Umberto Giovanella; Chiara Botta; Alberto Bossi; Emanuela Licandro; Stefano Maiorana

The photoluminescence and electroluminescence of a molecular precursor of helicene embedded in an active matrix formed by a hole-transporter polymer mixed with an electron transporter molecule are reported. Optimization of the weight ratio between the dye and the matrix is performed by a detailed study of the absolute emission efficiencies obtained by photoexcitation and by charge injection. A 0.17wt% dye concentration gives the best compromise among energy transfer, transport properties, and quenching effects induced by dye aggregation, leading to an external blue electroluminescence efficiency of 0.4% in a single layer device.
