Interaction between adenine, guanine and thymine in deoxyoligonucleotides: A proton magnetic resonance study

Karl Heinz Scheit; Friedrich Cramer; Albrecht Franke

Abstract In this paper the NMR spectra of deoxytrinucleotides containing thymine, adenine and guanine in deuterium oxide solution are reported and discussed. Spectra of trinucleotides consisting of purine and thymine showed an upfield shift of thymine proton signals as the result of vertical interaction of the heterocyclic bases. In the case of 5′- O -alkylphosphoryldeoxythymidylyl-(3′–5′)-deoxyguanylyl-(3′–5′)-deoxythymidine the NMR spectrum exhibited two different resonances for the thymine methyl protons, indicating that these methyl groups possess different magnetic environments.
