A bianthraquinone and 4′-O-methyl-ent-gallocatechin fromCassia trachypus

Franco Delle Monache; Ivan Leoncio D'albuquerque; Alda de Andrade Chiappeta; José F. De Méllo

Abstract A new bianthraquinone, 5,5′-bi-7-methylphyscion, and a new methylated ent -catechin have been isolated from the roots of Cassia trachypus . The structure of the bianthraquinone was elucidated by detailed NMR investigation while that of the catechin by comparison of molecular rotation and NMR data with those of known catechins.

Meroterpenoid naphthoquinones from Cordia corymbosa.

Lothar W. Bieber; Irene Messana; Sandra C.N. Lins; Alvaro Alves da Silva Filho; Alda de Andrade Chiappeta; Jose Francisco De Mello

Cordiaquinones A and B, the first examples of a new type of merosesquiterpenoid quinones, have been isolated from the roots of Cordia corymbosa. The structures of these 6-alkylsubstituted 1,4-naphthoquinones were elucidated by high field 1H NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry and chemical derivatization.

Anticancer and antimicrobial glycosides from ipomoea bahiensis

Lothar W. Bieber; Ávaro Alves Da Silva Filho; Rosália M.O. Corréa^ Lima; Alda de Andrade Chiappeta; Silene Carneiro do Nascimento; Ivone Antônia de Souza; José F. De Méllo; Hans Jürgen Veith

Abstract Four new antimicrobial glycosides have been isolated from Ipomoea bahiensis . Spectroscopic properties and basic and acidic hydrolysis characterized them as derivatives of 11 -hydroxy hexadecanoic and 11-hydroxy tetradecanoic acid, glycosidically linked in the 11-position to a trisaccharide unit composed of glucose, rhamnose and fucose which is esterified by tiglic and 3-hydroxy-2-methylbutyric acid. One of these compounds revealed significant activity against Sarcoma 180 in mice.

Arrabidaea harleyi A.H. Gentry (Bignoniaceae) e uma planta ornamental, encontrada em algumas regioes da Mata Atlântica do Brasil. A partir das cascas do caule foi isolada a mistura dos isomeros verbascosideo e isoverbascosideo. A mistura mostrou-se ativa frente a Staphylococcus aureus, Micrococcus luteus, Bacillus subtilis, Bacillus mycoides, Enterococcus faecalis, Escherichia coli, Serratia marcensis e Candida albicans. Foi estabelecida a concentracao minima inibitoria (CMI) atraves do metodo de difusao em meio solido.

Chemistry and pharmacology of a tertiary alkaloid from Strychnos trinervis root bark.

Margareth de F.F. Melo; Cid A. de M. Santos; Alda de Andrade Chiappeta; JoséF. de Mello; Rabindranath Mukherjee

Bisnordihydrotoxiferine has been isolated as the major alkaloid from the root bark of Strychnos trinervis. This compound shows a wide antimicrobial spectrum against gram-positive, gram-negative and acid-fast microorganisms, filamentous and yeast-like fungi and also phytopathogenic microorganisms. Preliminary studies also reveal some cytotoxic activity in KB cells which was confirmed by tests against sarcoma 180 tumors.

Environmental factors affecting sporulation of Fuligo septica (Myxomycetes) on sugar cane bagasse

Alda de Andrade Chiappeta; Kêsia Xisto da Fonseca Ribeiro de Sena; Laise de Holanda Cavalcanti

The influence of environmental factors on sporulation of Fuligo septica (L.) Wigg. and the abundance of this species on sugar cane bagasse (Saccharum officinarum L.), stored outdoors was studied. In Northeastern Brazil, between January/1997 and January/1998, a total of 29 specimens were collected through monthly collections of aethalia. The relationships between the abundance of aethalia and rainfall, temperature, relative humidity of the air and insolation were studied. Results indicated that on the substrate analyzed, F. septica was an abundant species. Sporulation occurred in all seasons of the year, with a well-defined peak at the end of winter and beginning of spring (August/September),which was strongly influenced by rainfall.

The cellular distribution of antifeedant prenylated anthranoids in the tissues ofVismia guianensis during development

Barbara Monacelli; Gabriella Pasqua; Nicoletta Rascio; Bruno Botta; G. Delle Monache; Alberto Vitali; Alda de Andrade Chiappeta

SummaryAccumulation and distribution of two types of phenolic antifeedant metabolites, vismiones and ferruginins, in specialized cells were investigated inVismia guianensis DC. Chemical, light, and electron-microscope analyses revealed that the two types of compounds were produced in different cells and organs and at different stages of plant development. Vismiones accumulated at various concentrations in the leaf, depending on its developmental stage, as well as in the stem of very young plants. Ferruginins appeared late in the plants development and accumulated exclusively in secretory ducts in the secondary body of the stem and in secretory cavities of the fruits.
