On Combining Crowdsourcing, Sensing and Open Data for an Accessible Smart City

This work presents a novel geospatial mapping service, based on OpenStreetMap, which has been designed and developed in order to provide personalized path to users with special needs. This system gathers data related to barriers and facilities of the urban environment via crowd sourcing and sensing done by users. It also considers open data provided by bus operating companies to identify the actual accessibility feature and the real time of arrival at the stops of the buses. The resulting service supports citizens with reduced mobility (users with disabilities and/or elderly people) suggesting urban paths accessible to them and providing information related to travelling time, which are tailored to their abilities to move and to the bus arrival time. The manuscript demonstrates the effectiveness of the approach by means of a case study focusing on the differences between the solutions provided by our system and the ones computed by main stream geospatial mapping services.

SIP-empowered optical networks for future IT services and applications

This article presents a novel application-aware network architecture for evolving and emerging IT services and applications. It proposes to enrich an optical burst switching network with a session control layer that can close the gap between application requests and network control. The session control layer is implemented using the session initiation protocol, giving birth to what is called a SIP-OBS architecture. The article discusses the important added value of this architecture, and shows that it may support a number of end-to-end resource discovery and reservation strategies (for both network and non-network resources). Finally, it presents a testbed implementation where this approach was experimentally validated.

SIP-enabled Optical Burst Switching architectures and protocols for application-aware optical networks

This paper presents a novel application-aware network architecture for emerging IT services and future Internet applications. It proposes and analyses network architectures that integrate Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) with Optical Burst Switched (OBS) network technology in a unified manner. It demonstrates that the proposed SIP-enabled OBS network can be used to manage application sessions and provide network and IT services according to the application requirements. Furthermore, various SIP over OBS layering architectures, utilizing a number of end-to-end resource discovery protocols (both for network and non-network (IT) resources) are presented and analyzed. Finally, this paper reports on the validation of functionalities, mechanisms and protocols for the proposed SIP-enabled OBS network, from the node level to the network level, through a test-bed demonstrator.

Network Resource Description Language

In this paper we discuss an architectural approach to the problem of Service oriented networking. Thanks to the results of ongoing test-bed implementations we argue that there is the need of a general language enabling the communications of service requests and requirements between applications and network elements. This paper shows a first level of formalization of such a lan- guage, called Network Resource Description Language (NRDL). The NRDL is based on RDF and aims at formalizing the general issues of network services abstraction and composition. The paper presents an overview of the NRDL and shows that it can be used as a services description language as well as a service negotiation protocol based on an offer/answer communication paradigm.

SIP based OBS networks for grid computing

In this paper we discuss the use of the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) as part of the control plane of an application aware Optical Burst Switching (OBS) network, able to support Grid computing applications. The paper presents the possible alternatives for the architecture of such control plane and reports of an experiment in an existing OBS test-bed where this approach was successfully tested in practice.

Architectural approaches for the integration of the service plane and control plane in optical networks

This paper presents some instantiations of novel application-aware network architectures for emerging IT services and future Internet applications. It proposes and analyses network architectures where the Control and Service Planes are closely and seamlessly interacting with the applications. One instantiation, the Grid-GMPLS (G^2MPLS, as defined by the Phosphorus project) is presented, which implements the Network Control Plane (NCP) architecture for the support of Grid Network Services (GNS). The GNS allows the provisioning of network and HPC/Grid resources in a single-step through a set of seamlessly integrated procedures. In a second example of instantiation, a quite popular application in signalling, i.e. the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP), is integrated with the Optical Burst Switched (OBS) network technology. The SIP-enabled OBS network can be used to manage application sessions and provide network and IT services according to application requirements. This paper investigates the requirements that these new integrated architectures impose on supporting network Control and Service Planes, and technologies, and discusses their possible implementations.

Cross-layer resource orchestration for cloud service delivery: A seamless SDN approach

Abstract One of the main challenges of cloud-based service provisioning is to deploy a coordinated control of both application- and network-layer resources in order to provide adaptive service data delivery and adequate user service experiences. In this work we propose a signaling framework architecture for cross-layer resource orchestration, where service awareness provided by session control is effectively combined with the flexibility of software-defined network control. Following a hands-on approach, the proposed solution takes advantage of existing and commonly deployed technologies aiming at an incremental deployment of the software-defined control mechanisms for the purpose of cross-functional service orchestration. The signaling framework is presented and validated through experimental activities carried out on a test-bed reproducing a realistic cloud-based service scenario. Results are compared against an analytical model that allows to investigate and quantify the sensitivity of the cloud-based service performance to the most relevant system parameters. The study demonstrates that a critical role is played by the limitations of the response time of real devices such as commercial routers, and highlights how orchestration functions can mitigate the effect of such limitations while addressing scalability of the overall system.

A practical approach to scheduler implementation for optical Burst/Packet Switching

Optical Burst and Packet Switching represent two key paradigms to build bandwidth-efficient IP over DWDM networks. Due to very strict time constraints, one of the major implementation issues common to both technologies is the actual feasibility of the scheduler that is in charge of assigning transmission resources to burst/packets upon request while executing optimized algorithms for contention resolution. This paper demonstrates how a specific formulation of the scheduling problem can be the basis for a cost-effective and practical implementation of the scheduler control logic, resulting in processing times that are greatly reduced and could show very limited dependence on the traffic conditions.

Automated transport service management in the future Internet: concepts and operations

This paper describes a possible approach to provide advanced communication services for the Future Internet in an automated way. This is achieved by introducing a new Cognitive Transport Servicelayer on top of the traditional transport layer, which is used by the network to automatically negotiate the required transport service with the applications. Experimental validation of the proposed solution is discussed with the help of two case studies: bandwidth reservation on a secure channel and dynamic bandwidth negotiation for variable-quality video streaming.
