Suicide in depressives

Abstract Depressive patients who committed suicide were compared in a matched controlled study with those who did not suicide. Significantly more of those who suicided were unmarried, foreign born, lived alone, had previously attempted suicide, and were depressed and suicidal at their last admission.

Some determinants of affective symptoms in epileptics.

Forty-two epileptics were given a psychiatric interview and completed five questionnaires. Current affective symptoms were significantly associated with a past history of neurotic disorder but not with temporal lobe epilepsy.

Risk factors and depression in Canadian women

Abstract In a matched controlled study of 88 depressed Canadian women, a family history of depression, parental loss before 17 years, poor marriage, and unemployment were found to be risk factors associated with depression.

Hysteria: A Case Note Study*

In a matched retrospective study, 31 patients with hysterical neurosis were compared with 31 with depressive neurosis. There were no significant differences between the groups for siblings position, medical work, brain disease, poor marriage, frigidity, or family history of psychiatric disorder. Significantly more of the hysterics had a preceding head injury and 29% had a past history of hysteria. By the time of the study 48% had been treated for depression.

Schizophrenia and Klinefelter's syndrome.

Psychiatric disorder in relation to Klinefelters syndrome is reviewed. A well documented case report is presented of a schizophreniform illness in a patient with Klinefelters.

Early parental loss in depressive neurosis compared with other neuroses.

In a matched controlled study 102 patients with neurotic depression were compared with other neurotics. There was significantly more parental loss before 17 years of age in the depressive patients.

Obsessive-compulsive neurosis: Phenomenology, outcome and a comparison with hysterical neurosis

Summary A chart review of 51 patients with obsessive-compulsive neurosis showed a middle-class preponderance with onset in the early twenties. The men were mainly single and had more obsessional thoughts about sexual themes than the women. Outcome of treatment was poor.

Rejection in Parents of Schizophrenic Outpatients Correlates With Time Spent Together

Abstract Parental rejection was measured in the parents of 16 schizophrenic outpatients by a self-report questionnaire. Parental expression of hostility was positively correlated with time spent with the patient. This finding is discussed in the context of previous work with Expressed Emotion (EE) and schizophrenic relapse.

Risk factors for depression in Canadians

In a matched controlled study 72 Canadian patients with a major depressive episode were compared with non-depressed and never depressed orthopedic patients. Significantly more of the depressives had parental loss before 17 years of age, a poor marriage before the onset of depression and a family history of depression.

Acute schizo-affective disorder.

In a matched controlled study, 26 acute schizoaffective patients had significantly more parental loss before 17 years of age than 26 non-depressed schizophrenics. Schizo-affective disorder may occur in schizophrenics with risk factors for depression such as parental loss before 17 years of age.
