A study was made of the action of desulphurizing and denitrifying bacteria from oil-well water on paraffinic and naphthenic oils. Under aerobic conditions, 90% of the strains tested preferentially assimilated paraffinic oil and 10% naphthenic oil. The higher the specific weight of the oil, the lower the degree of growth. In the action of the bacteria on paraffinic oil, the paraffinic hydrocarbons are split up and in their action on naphthenic oil, the naphthenic hydrocarbons are split up. In both types of oil, the most intensive decomposition occurred in hydrocarbons with a low molecular weight. Under anaerobic conditions, the viscosity of the oil diminished, under aerobic conditions it increased. This work constitutes the starting-point for a detailed study of the effect of microorganisms on petroleum and for the study of the utilization of this process in the recovery of oil. SummaryA study was made of the action of desulphurizing and denitrifying bacteria from oil-well water on paraffinic and naphthenic oils.
