A study was carried out to set up the methodology of the relative growth rate of seedlings to evaluate soybean seed vigor. Soybean seeds of ten commercial seed lots were evaluated by the following tests: field emergence, germination (first and final count), accelerated aging, cold, tetrazolium (1-3 and 1-5), electrical conductivity, seedling length, dry biomass and relative growth rate of seedlings. The experimental design used was the completely randomized block with four replications. The results were submitted to variance and correlation analysis. The average results were compared by means of the Scott-Knott grouping test. The relative growth rate of seedlings showed significant correlation (p<0.01) with all the evaluated seed vigor tests and was considered satisfactory in evaluating soybean seed vigor.

The little knowledge on the biology of the species Tecoma stans (L.) Kunth (Bignoniaceae), known by its yellow trumpet flower and the importance that the same is acquiring mainly because of its aggressive characteristic have motivated the present work. Anatomical aspects of the fruit and seed can be used in taxonomy, as well as in studies related to the ecology of the species. The objective was to describe and to illustrate the morphology and anatomy of the fruit and seeds of the trumpet flower. Fruits from different plants were collected in the municipal districts of Jacarezinho and Maringa, North of the State of Parana. Permanent and semipermanent slides were made. The morphological and anatomical analyses allowed the following observations: dry fruit, dehiscent, of the loculicidal capsule type; 2-carpel and 2-locular ovary with a longitudinal medium septa and anatropous and unitegmy ovules; line of dehiscence present since the beginning of the fruit development, when the continuous layer of fibers is interrupted by a strip of parenchyma cells; winged seed, not albuminous, with coriaceous wrapper that covers the embryo. This is straight, with short hypocotyl-radicular axis and no evident plumule. The wing of the seed is membranous and hyaline.

Two crosses involving three sorghum lines (S. bicolor L. Moench) BR 007A x BR 501R and BR 008A x BR 501R resulted in two forage hybrids: BR 601 and BR 602. The hybrids and their generations F2 and F3, in total of nine genotypes, were evaluated in two planting dates (normal and second season) as to several yield and forage quality characters: genetic effects, mid-parent heterosis, heterobeltiosis and inbreeding depression in F2 and F3 generations were evaluated. The following conclusions were obtained: (a) compared to the normal planting, the grain sorghum hybrids showed in second season, smaller plant height, earlier flowering, smaller green, and dry matter weight and higher protein content, stalk proportion and smaller planicle proportion; (b) heterosis for dry matter was positive and negative for protein at the two planting dates of the two hybrids; (c) inbreeding depression was positive for the F2 generation of the BR 602 hybrid at normal planting date, indicating that the commercial use of F2s seeds is not recommended; (d) the additive genetic effects were predominant for most of the characters, of the hybrid of BR 007A x BR 501R, used as grain dominant effects were important for yield characters determination at the two planting dates in forage hybrid BR 008A x BR 501R; (e) dominance effects explained most of the significant heterosis of several characters.

EXPLORATORY DATA ANALYSIS FROM DATA SET OF CORN SEED MATURATION ABSTRACT - This exploratory data analysis indicated the alternative use of asymetrical statistical distribution for data analysis from time to flowering until seed maturation is achieved. It was used data from the seed germination test, vigor tests, moisture content and seed dry weight as dependent variables. The hybrids corn seeds were planted in three diferent times of seeding and samples of plants were taken in each plot. The time interval of four days between each sample was used, starting in the 23 rd and finishing in the 59 th . The Normal, Lognormal, Gumbel and Weibull distribution was used to determine the highest numerical value of the loglikelihood as a test of goodness of fit. The highest numerical value of the loglikelihood was provided by the Gumbel distribution fit to the proportional data set but the seed dry weight and water content had a best fit to the Weibull distribution.
