Emotional Intelligence and Transformational Leadership

Alexander-Stamatios Antoniou

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Nelson Mandela, clearly among the greatest leaders of our time, had different childhoods, different experiences, different struggles, and different goals. Yet both had a transformational impact upon those around them. What sets these two men apart as leaders? Transformational leadership. Unlike the traditional, dogmatic transactional leader or the handsoff laissez-faire leader, transformational leaders do more than simply lead—they stimulate others to transcend their own needs and interests for a common goal.

Therapeutic Applications of Drama Therapy Among Immigrant Drug Abusers

Alexander-Stamatios Antoniou; Marina Dalla

Drug dependence creates a marginal state with negative consequences for the individual, his/her family and the wider social community. Substance abuse among immigrants can be related to coexistence of factors related to immigration history, profound losses and acculturation stress. Drama therapy “home” approach (past, present, future), as a part of a treatment process, through storytelling, imagination, role and projective play, improvisation and embodied expression, provides immigrants a safe space not only to maintain abstinence from drugs but also to explore a continuity of identity between their homeland and their new country.

Psychosocial Factors and Suicidal Behaviour in Adolescents

Alexander-Stamatios Antoniou; Eftychia Mitsopoulou; George P. Chrousos

Suicides as well as suicidal behaviours are considered to be one of the main health problems in the world, rated as the second most common cause of death among young people globally and the 15th leading cause of death worldwide among all populations (World Health Organization, 2012). According to statistical data and epidemiological reports, in Europe suicide is the second leading cause of death among people 15 to 29 years old (Blum & Nelson-Mmari, 2004), while in a study by Kokkevi, Rotsika, Arapaki, and Richardson (2011) among Greek adolescents throughout a period of 23 years (1984–2007), self-reported suicide attempts doubled in prevalence from 7.0% to 13.4%.
