Blue phosphorescent emitters: new N-heterocyclic platinum(II) tetracarbene complexes

Photoluminescence measurements show that platinum(II) tetracarbene complexes, which could be obtained via different synthetic routes, are interesting lead structures for the development of blue emitters for PhOLEDs with good quantum yields and high photostability.

3,3'-Dimethyl-1,1'-methylenediimidazolium tetrachlorocobaltate(II).

The title compound, (C9H14N4)[CoCl4], a methylene-bridged bis-imidazolium salt containing a tetrachlorocobaltate anion, is one of the first examples where an alkyl-bridged bis-imidazolium compound could be structurally characterized. Short C-H...Cl contacts between the imidazolium C-H bonds and the Cl atoms of the counter-anion build up a three-dimensional network and indicate that the C-H bonds are strongly polarized.

Bis(1-tert-butyl-1H-imidazole-κN3)dichloridocobalt(II).

In the crystal structure of the title compound, [CoCl(2)(C(7)H(12)N(2))(2)], molecular units are formed by coordination of the unsubstituted N atoms of two tert-butyl-substituted imidazole molecules and two chloride ligands, which distinguishes the complex from structures of imidazolium-based dications with tetrachloridocobaltate dianions. There are two crystallographically independent molecules in the asymmetric unit, related by a noncrystallographic inversion centre.
