Impact of Trust on Local Residents’ Mega-Event Perceptions and Their Support

Dogan Gursoy; Medet Yolal; Manuel Alector Ribeiro; Alexandre Panosso Netto

This study examines the influence of residents’ trust in government and organizing committee on their impact perceptions and support for a mega-event, namely, 2014 FIFA World Cup. Findings suggest significant relationships between impact perceptions and support. While trust in government is found to be a significant determinant of impact perceptions, findings indicate no significant relationship between trust in government and support, which suggest that the relationship is mediated by impact perceptions. While a positive relationship between trust in the organizing committee and positive impact perceptions is found, findings suggest no significant relationship between trust in the organizing committee and negative impact perceptions. Trust in the organizing committee is also found to have significant positive impact on support.

Robert Glücksmann (1877–1942): founder of Berlin School of Tourism Research

Alexandre Panosso Netto; Margret Jäger

First time we got in touch with the name of Robert Glücksmann was when we started to investigate the history of tourist thought. We notice that he was mentioned on a frequent basis, but only in footnotes, with confusing data and superficial information. The following situation caught our attention: some authors stated that he had been an important researcher, but it was hard to find data and studies on him. Then we decided to investigate his story. As we understood a little of his life and work, we just admired his dedication to tourism studies. The charisma he had in conducting his researches and papers related to tourism caught the attention of all his colleagues. This statement was confirmed both by his most faithful collaborator, Grünthal 1962a, 1962b and Moß (2000), who examined the letters exchanged between Glücksmann’s family members during the Second World War. His academic work at that time was highlighted, among other reasons, for trying to make tourism a field of study worth analysing in the academy. According to death certificate under nr. 345/1955, issued by Sonderstandesamt Arolsen on 30 June 1959, his full name was Robert Jakob Glücksmann. This was the only document we found with the middle name “Jakob”. In all publications we checked his signature is Robert Glücksmann. He worked as a consultant of hospitality and tourism, professor, researcher, editor, author of books and articles, and director of research public agency. In the field of research and education in tourism and hospitality, we highlight some of his main achievements and works:

Mario Carlos Beni – first tourism professor in Brazil

Alexandre Panosso Netto

It was in the year 2000 that I personally met Mario Carlos Beni at a conference of tourism in Brazil. It caught my eye the fact that wherever he would go to, a group of young students would follow him asking questions, dialoguing and taking his best-known book entitled “Análise Estrutural do Turismo” [Structural Analysis of Tourism] to be autographed. Sometime later, I witnessed that at these events he would not only autograph books, but also notebooks, sheets of paper and even napkins for students who wanted to get a souvenir from him. Some colleagues and students call him “guru of Brazilian tourism”, and this is due to his remarkable engagement andworkwith tourism in Brazil, both in the academy and in publicmanagement since the beginning of the 1970s. Because of his long record of activities in the area – as well as his political and loyal relationship – he is one of the most famous personalities in Brazilian tourism, which allows him free access to multiple educational, professional and public instances in all national territory. In 2018, approaching his 80th birthday and in good health, he announced he was supervising his last master student, but would continue to take part in events and to act in various associations he has been working with. When he was younger, he participated in many tourism conferences in all continents of the globe in which he met and worked with the great names of worldwide tourism of his generation. Although he has been known by and is a contemporary of great international authors, his papers have not been widely used out of Brazil, for they have been published specially in Portuguese (43), and some in English (7), French (4) and Spanish (1). His preference for publishing specially in Portuguese besides language facilities is due to the fact that his studies have direct relation with Brazilian tourism and had as objective the formation of freethinkers of tourism in Brazil. About his life and work in Portuguese language, a chapter of book (Panosso Netto, 2005a) as well as an article on a scientific journal have been published (Borges, Laíssa, & Silva, 2016). This is the first paper to be published about his life and work in English language.

Tourism Knowledge Transfer in Brazil

Alexandre Panosso Netto; Luiz Gonzaga Godoi Trigo; Carlos Eduardo Silveira

Abstract Brazilian higher education in the field of tourism took off in the 1970s, reaching its course and student peaks in the first years of this century. Recent research shows, however, that many graduates are still occupying hotel reception positions, in most cases with an operational status. The Brazilian government will occasionally hire researchers from companies and institutes not related to the tourism field. Even though the link between these two worlds is crucial, the commercial tourism industry in Brazil does not value academic insights, and the academy does not look beyond its epistemological and theoretical borders. This chapter will discuss the situation in Brazil and offer perspectives on measure needed to close the gap between theory and practice.

International travel to and from Brazil – Overseas tourism as a luxury good and a status symbol

Ulrich Gunter; Alexandre Panosso Netto

Using data for the period 1995Q1–2012Q4, single-equation error correction models for real tourism import demand to Brazil and real tourism export demand from Brazil are derived. According to breakpoint tests, two periods (pre-2003 and post-2003) have to be distinguished. While international travel to and from Brazil can be seen as a luxury good for the whole period, low economic growth rates at the global level and the real appreciation of the Brazilian currency “real” from 2003 onward have led to stagnating real tourism exports and decreases in long-term income and price elasticities. However, high economic growth rates in Brazil and the real appreciation from 2003 onward have led to strongly growing real tourism imports and increases in long-term income and price elasticities. In line with international travel being regarded as a status symbol in Brazil, a Veblen effect of conspicuous consumption can be confirmed for the post-2003 period.

Latin America: Imaginary, Reality and Tourism

Alexandre Panosso Netto; Luiz Gonzaga Godoi Trigo

Latin America has always dazzled travelers. Conquistadors, missionaries, courtiers, merchants, smugglers, adventurers, chroniclers and scientists have always been enchanted by its natural wonders and its aboriginal cultures. A rich culture and history shaped the challenges and conquers of Latin America. In this chapter we described and analyzed contributed to social and local economic difficulties and, consequently, difficulties for tourism. We should reflect on the fact that tourism does not develop satisfactorily in the macro-region because it suffers the negative effects of poor public management, poverty and a lack of formal education in the population.
