Technical Communique: Robust sampled-data stabilization of linear systems: an input delay approach

Emilia Fridman; Alexandre Seuret; Jean-Pierre Richard

A new approach to robust sampled-data control is introduced. The system is modelled as a continuous-time one, where the control input has a piecewise-continuous delay. Sufficient linear matrix inequalities (LMIs) conditions for sampled-data state-feedback stabilization of such systems are derived via descriptor approach to time-delay systems. The only restriction on the sampling is that the distance between the sequel sampling times is not greater than some prechosen h>0 for which the LMIs are feasible. For h->0 the conditions coincide with the necessary and sufficient conditions for continuous-time state-feedback stabilization. Our approach is applied to two problems: to sampled-data stabilization of systems with polytopic type uncertainities and to regional stabilization by sampled-data saturated state-feedback.

Wirtinger-based integral inequality: Application to time-delay systems

Alexandre Seuret; Frédéric Gouaisbaut

In the last decade, the Jensen inequality has been intensively used in the context of time-delay or sampled-data systems since it is an appropriate tool to derive tractable stability conditions expressed in terms of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs). However, it is also well-known that this inequality introduces an undesirable conservatism in the stability conditions and looking at the literature, reducing this gap is a relevant issue and always an open problem. In this paper, we propose an alternative inequality based on the Fourier Theory, more precisely on the Wirtinger inequalities. It is shown that this resulting inequality encompasses the Jensen one and also leads to tractable LMI conditions. In order to illustrate the potential gain of employing this new inequality with respect to the Jensen one, two applications on time-delay and sampled-data stability analysis are provided.

Stability of Discrete-Time Systems With Time-Varying Delays via a Novel Summation Inequality

Alexandre Seuret; Frédéric Gouaisbaut; Emilia Fridman

This technical note is concerned with the stability analysis of discrete linear systems with time-varying delays. The novelty of the technical note comes from the consideration of a new inequality which is less conservative than the celebrated Jensen inequality employed in the context of discrete-time delay systems. This inequality is a discrete-time counterpart of the Wirtinger-based integral inequality that was recently employed for the improved analysis of continuous-tine systems with delays. However, differently from the continuous-time case, the proof of the new inequality is not based on the Wirtinger inequality. The method is also combined with an efficient representation of the improved reciprocally convex combination inequality in order to reduce the conservatism induced by the LMIs optimization setup. The effectiveness of the proposed result is illustrated by some classical examples from the literature.

Hierarchy of LMI conditions for the stability analysis of time-delay systems

Alexandre Seuret; Frédéric Gouaisbaut

Abstract Assessing stability of time-delay systems based on the Lyapunov–Krasovskii functionals has been the subject of many contributions. Most of the results are based, first, on an a priori design of functionals and, finally, on the use of the famous Jensen’s inequality. In contrast with this design process, the present paper aims at providing a generic set of integral inequalities which are asymptotically non conservative and then to design functionals driven by these inequalities. The resulting stability conditions form a hierarchy of LMI which is competitive with the most efficient existing methods (delay-partitioning, discretization and sum of squares), in terms of conservatism and of complexity. Finally, some examples show the efficiency of the method.

A looped-functional approach for robust stability analysis of linear impulsive systems

Corentin Briat; Alexandre Seuret

A new functional-based approach is developed for the stability analysis of linear impulsive systems. The new method, which introduces looped-functionals, considers non-monotonic Lyapunov functions and leads to LMIs conditions devoid of exponential terms. This allows one to easily formulate dwell-times results, for both certain and uncertain systems. It is also shown that this approach may be applied to a wider class of impulsive systems than existing methods. Some examples, notably on sampled-data systems, illustrate the efficiency of the approach.

Consensus under communication delays

Alexandre Seuret; Dimos V. Dimarogonas; Karl Henrik Johansson

This paper deals with the consensus problem under communication network inducing delays. It is well-known that introducing a delay leads in general to a reduction of the performance or to instability due to the fact that time-delay systems are infinite dimensional. For instance, the set of initial conditions of a time-delay system is not a vector but a function taken in an interval. Therefore, investigating the effect of time-delays in the consensus problem is an important issue. In the present paper, we assume that each agent receives instantaneously its own state information but receives the state information from its neighbors after a constant delay. Two stability criteria are provided based on the frequency approach and on Lyapunov-Krasovskii techniques given in terms of LMI. An analytic expression of the consensus equilibrium which depends on the delay and on the initial conditions taken in an interval is derived. The efficiency of the method is tested for different network communication schemes.

On the use of the Wirtinger inequalities for time-delay systems

Alexandre Seuret; Frédéric Gouaisbaut

The paper addresses the stability problem of linear time delay system. In the literature, the most popular approach to tackle this problem relies on the use of Lyapunov-Krasovskii functionals. Many results have proposed new functionals and techniques for deriving less and less conservative stability conditions. Nevertheless, all these approaches use the same trick, the well-known Jensens inequality which generally induces some conservatism difficult to overcome. In light of those observations, we propose to reduce the conservatism of Lyapunov-Krasovskii functionals by introducing new classes of integral inequalities called Wirtinger inequalities. This integral type inequality is rstly shown to encompass Jensens inequality and is then employed to derive new stability conditions. To this end, a slightly modi ed Lyapunov functional is proposed. Several examples illustrate the e ectiveness of our methodology.

Convex Dwell-Time Characterizations for Uncertain Linear Impulsive Systems

Corentin Briat; Alexandre Seuret

New sufficient conditions for the characterization of dwell-times for linear impulsive systems are proposed and shown to coincide with continuous decrease conditions of a certain class of looped-functionals, a recently introduced type of functionals suitable for the analysis of hybrid systems. This approach allows to consider Lyapunov functions that evolve nonmonotonically along the flow of the system in a new way, broadening then the admissible class of systems which may be analyzed. As a byproduct, the particular structure of the obtained conditions makes the method is easily extendable to uncertain systems by exploiting some convexity properties. Several examples illustrate the approach.

Static Output Feedback Sliding Mode Control Design via an Artificial Stabilizing Delay

Alexandre Seuret; Christopher Edwards; Sarah K. Spurgeon; Emilia Fridman

It is well known that for linear, uncertain systems, a static output feedback sliding mode controller can only be determined if a particular triple associated with the reduced order dynamics in the sliding mode is stabilizable. This paper shows that the static output feedback sliding mode control design problem can be solved for a broader class of systems if a known delay term is deliberately introduced into the switching function. Effectively the reduced order sliding mode dynamics are stabilized by the introduction of this artificial delay.

Affine Characterizations of Minimal and Mode-Dependent Dwell-Times for Uncertain Linear Switched Systems

Corentin Briat; Alexandre Seuret

An alternative approach for minimum and mode-dependent dwell-time characterization for switched systems is derived. While minimum-dwell time results require the subsystems to be asymptotically stable, mode-dependent dwell-time results can consider unstable subsystems and dwell-times within a, possibly unbounded, range of values. The proposed approach is related to Lyapunov looped-functionals, a new type of functionals leading to stability conditions affine in the system matrices, unlike standard results for minimum dwell-time. These conditions are expressed as infinite-dimensional LMIs which can be solved using recent polynomial optimization techniques such as sum-of-squares. The specific structure of the conditions is finally utilized in order to derive dwell-time stability results for uncertain switched systems. Several examples illustrate the efficiency of the approach.
